Description
After Vega de Toro, the producer of Numanthia and Termanthia, was taken over by Moët & Chandon, the former owners bought old wine plots and started producing Almirez, Victorino and Alabaster. Almirez comes from 50 year old vines and has been aged in wood for 14 months. This sensational wine is a 100% Tinta de Tora. The Almirez has an inky black/couple color in the glass. It is a full, complex wine with ripe dark red fruit: blackcurrants, cassis, caramel, coffee, minerals, tobacco and beautiful wood tones. This full-bodied Almirez is meaty in the aftertaste with great density and purity and a long aftertaste. According to Robert Parker, a wine with ".....and a finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds". Unbeatable value for money. The Almirez is a wine that will be a great asset for the next 10 years+.
The Spanish winery Teso La Monja is an exclusive winery and is one of the beautiful wineries of Hermanos Eguren. The vineyards are located in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena. Toro is certainly famous for the fact that it still has many ungrafted/original vines that have not been affected by the grape aphid (Pre-phylloxera). The sandy soils prevent the louse from digging tunnels and thus reaching the area. This is in contrast to more than 95% of all vineyards that were lost during that time, so we are still talking about ungrafted and therefore original authentic grapes (vines). This version is a magnum of 1.5 liters.
FACT: In the Tab: Appendix you will find the official fact sheet of this beautiful wine. We will send it to you automatically when you order this wine. The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you pick up the wine you will also receive a nice discount.

The 2020 Almirez comes from 41.7 hectares of vines ranging between 15 and 65 years of age. It fermented for 20 days, followed by malolactic in barrel and 14 months in French oak barrels, 30% of them new. The wine is quite approachable and has finesse; it's fine-boned, more fluid and refined than other years. The rains in August resulted in larger grapes with more juice, and the wine is quite approachable even at this young age. It's expressive, clean and powerful (the place is like that) and with 14.81% alcohol that goes unnoticed. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins and some creaminess and spiciness from the time in barrel, developing some mintiness with time in the glass; later, there's more licorice and even aniseed and fennel aromas. 88,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022.
Teso la Monja is the project the Eguren family from Rioja created in Toro after they sold Numanthia to the LVMH group. They produce around 200,000 bottles from old and very old vines. I tasted the wines from 2020, a wet and cooler year with a warm end of the season, but in Toro, there was mildew more than in other regions, as they had rains close to the harvest and the grapes grew. The wines are lighter and a bit fresher with lower pH. They're fruit-driven, quite accessible young and quite direct, despite having a good structure and tannins, but all of it in good balance. They compared 2020 with vintages like 2010 and 2014, good years marked by rain in August that allowed the grapes to ripen fully. The vineyards and vines are certified organic, but they do not show the seal on the bottles.

The 2021 Almirez, sourced from La Jara, Villabuena del Puente and Valdefinjas vineyards in Toro, was aged up to 14 months in oak barrels. Garnet in hue. Its ripe aromas feature plums, dried flowers, undergrowth, licorice and garrigue against a cedar backdrop. Dry and rich on the palate, the mild and balanced flow leads to a lasting, juicy, cherry-like finish. The 2021 is a nuanced Toro wine.

Brothers Marcos and Miguel Eguren, originally from Rioja, control several wineries under the name Sierra Cantabria. In Toro, they built Numanthia, later sold it, and, in 2007, founded Teso La Monja in Valdefinjas. The spacious winery, designed like old Rioja casonas, houses a wide array of open tops. Marcos Eguren, leading winemaker, gently extracts Tinta de Toro. The Almirez and Victorino wines are fine examples, with Alabaster best defining the contained energy and polish achieved with this variety.

The Spanish winery Teso La Monja is located in the Toro. The winery heralds a new era for the Eguren family in DO Toro, a land from which she fell in love with the capacity of the old pre-phylloxera vines. Teso La Monja was founded in 2007. Wines that bring the potential of the Tinta de Toro with elegance, finesse and freshness, shared by all wines of the Eguren family attributes. The Almirez, Victorino and also the great Romanico (unprecedented good value for money in our opinion) are invariably 90+ Parker and Penin wines. Not surprising knowing that the Eguren family is also behind the Alabaster cult wine.
The Teso La Monja winery is located on north-facing loam soils with gravel on the surface, providing longer vegetative cycles for achieving balanced, powerful yet elegant wines that convey the maximum potential of soil minerality.
