This is already the 6th vintage of this fantastic white wine from Remirez de Ganuza and this wine is already at the top of the white (Rioja) wines. They chose to put this Remirez Blanco in a Burgundy type bottle and we can completely understand that. Although still young, the Remirez Blanco has the complexity of a fine Burgundy or Rhone wine. Fresh, complex, beautifully interwoven wood, mineral, elegant. In its younger years we advise to decant the Remirez Blanco. This is really enjoyable!!! In the Verema blog (the most authoritative independent wine blog about Spanish wine) the Ganuza Blanco was voted the best white Spanish wine.

The Remirez Blanco consists of 70% Viura and 30% Malvasia from vines between 60 and 80 years old. As with all wines, Fernando has the grapes picked by hand and there are 2 sorting tables, so a double selection to ensure that only the best grapes go into the wine. The grapes that do not make it (sometimes 30-40% are sold to winemakers in the region (because even this fruit is often more beautiful than what they have themselves). The grapes come from a single vineyard planted in 1978 on rolling clay and limestone soils at an altitude of 600 meters in San Vicente de la Sonsierra.

The wine is barrel-fermented and matured for 12 months in new French oak. The wine is matured sur lie and the barrels are turned a quarter turn every 7 days. After maceration and fermentation, an élevage follows with regular bâtonnages in a closed circuit to avoid contact with the air. Fernando places the barrels on rollers so that he can turn the barrels to mix the lees with the wine. After bottling, the wine is aged for at least 12 months (and often longer) in the beautiful cellar of Remirez de Ganuza before the wine is released.

The Remirez de Ganuza Blanco Reserva is an absolute top white wine where the great acidity and minerality are particularly noticeable. In the nose we smell granny smit apple, white flowers, citrus fruit, very nicely interwoven oak and in the distance a little apricot. The taste is very beautiful. Mouth-filling, fresh, lemon peel, pebbly and saliva-inducing due to the beautiful bitterness and very nicely interwoven oak. This is a very stylish, elegant modern Rioja wine with a great aftertaste. Best to decant in its younger years.

1. Grilled sea bass with fennel, lemon zest and olive oil
The fresh acidity of the wine matches the citrus notes, while the aromatic fennel enhances the floral and spicy profile of the wine. The texture of the fish matches the creamy structure of the wine.

2. Oven-baked chicken leg with garlic, lemon and thyme
The juicy, tender meat and fresh spiciness round out the wood-aged notes of the wine and bring out the fruity character.

3. Risotto with asparagus, Parmesan cheese and a hint of lemon
The creaminess of the risotto complements the texture of the wine, while the asparagus and lemon accentuate the fresh, mineral aspect. Parmesan adds depth.

4. Slow-cooked leek with hazelnut butter and grated Manchego
Leek has a soft, slightly sweet flavour that goes well with the wine's ageing notes. The hazelnut butter underlines the nutty aspect, and the cheese adds saltiness and richness.

5. Lobster with saffron cream sauce and pea puree
The creamy sauce reflects the roundness of the wine, while saffron and shellfish notes emphasize the refined character. The peas provide freshness and balance.

6. Fried sweetbreads with cauliflower cream and apple capers
The combination of soft textures, subtle fatness and a sour touch brings both the depth and freshness of the wine to life. The dish matches the gastronomic style of this white Rioja.

Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of the wines of the Top Rioja House: Remirez de Ganuza and we are very proud of this because Remirez de Ganuza belongs to the absolute top of Spain and is also highly appreciated internationally. All their wines score well above the 90 Parker and Penin point mark with the absolute peak for the 2004 Gran Reserva which has received a whopping 100 points.

The owner of this absolute top domain is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza. Obsessed with quality with an ongoing commitment to excellence in his wine, Fernando is the absolute pioneer in Innovation. At Remirez de Ganuza, even the smallest detail in the entire production chain of the wines is looked at and they are constantly optimizing. Fernado's motto is that exceptional quality can only be achieved through strict selection. His knowledge and experience with La Rioja vineyards make him one of the most appreciated winemakers in the region. The vineyards are spread over the villages of Samaniego, Laguardia, Leza and Elciego which are located in the most beautiful part of the Rioja namely the Rioja Alavesa. The bottom of the vineyards have a limestone clay composition with abundance of gravel and small round stones. Remirez de Ganuza only works with very old vines with an average age of 60 years or older. About 90% of the vines are Tempranillo, the rest of the vineyards include Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. The vineyards are 'en gobelet' but with a support on wire so that there is a larger exposure to the sun and better photosynthesis. A unique system that Fernando developed himself.

At the Remirez de Ganuza winery, the grapes undergo a strict selection, which also shows how quality-conscious but also how innovative Fernando is making absolute top wine. All grapes are harvested by hand and the grapes are first "rested" in the cooling chamber for 24 hours. First is separation from the bottom and shoulders of each cluster. Only the “los hombros” or the shoulders (the top part of the bunch of grapes) are used for his Reserva wines (Fincas de Ganuza, Remirez de Ganuza reserva and gran reserva and Trasnocho) because these are the most ripe grapes with the most sun seen.
