Description
The Barbaresco DOCG Starderi is a red wine, aged for about 24 months, partly in oak barrels, produced with Nebbiolo grapes from the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) area of Barbaresco. The Barbaresco DOCG Starderi is an important, long-lived, elegant wine. Montaribaldi has some plots in some famous vineyards such as the Rio Sordo and now also in the Starderi. Here the top models Barbersco's are made. The Starderi vineyard is located in the municipality of Neive and is of course a 100 Nebbiolo located at an altitude of 220 meters above sea level with a southern exposure. The soil of this beautiful (small) vineyard consists of a layer of gray-blue marls (more and less sandy) and is very calcareous and was planted in 1985
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening grape variety. It must be harvested between the end of September and the first fifteen days of October. Once in the winery, the grapes are destemmed and pressed. They are then placed in stainless steel thermo-conditioned tanks where alcoholic fermentation and maceration take place. This lasts for at least a week at a temperature of 28-32 °C. After decanting and pouring, the wine remains in contact with its lees (temperature of 20-22 °C) for at least two months while it completes the malo-lactic fermentation. Now the wine is ready to begin the 24 months of aging partly in both new and used barriques (225 L). Finally, after 2 years from the harvest, the Barbaresco DOCG Starderi is bottled and, after a few months of storage in our cellar, it is ready to be marketed.
In the glass, the Montaribaldi Starderi is garnet red with rich aromas in the nose, tones of violets and aromas of cocoa, vanilla and tobacco from the wood aging; In the mouth, the Starderi is full and persistent. The tannins are strict, but neither bitter nor astringent and the wine has, in addition to fruitiness, also beautiful freshness and this makes this Barbersco Starderi very elegant and harmonious and promises to have a long life in which the strict tannins under the influence of the typical nebbiolo acids will merge fantastically. Advice is to decant the wine and we like to drink this wine in a large, spacious wine glass (burgundy type). Montaribaldi has a small but very beautiful exclusive plot in the famous Starderi vineyard and shares this vineyard with, among others, la Spinetta and Traversa Giuseppe.

BAROLO VS BARBERESCO
Piedmont - synonymous with truffles, risotto and, of course, delicious wines! - is considered one of Italy's premier wine regions. The local conditions of terrain, soil and weather produce some fantastic wines. As for the reds, the Barolos and Barbarescos are world-famous, powerful, ageing wines. Despite Barolo and Barbaresco being made from the same grape, Nebbiolo, and produced in neighbouring regions within 10 miles of each other, the wines of Barbaresco and Barolo have some distinctive differences.
The Barbaresco area is located south of the Tanaro river and due to its location the area has a slightly higher average temperature which allows the Nebbiolo grape to ripen slightly earlier than in the Barolo area. Young tannins in a young Barbaresco are often not as hard as Barolo and under DOCG rules it is permitted to release Barbaresco for sale a year earlier than Barolo. The most pronounced difference between the two wines is that the tannins of Barbaresco tend to soften more quickly making the wine more approachable at a younger age than Barolo. The Barbaresco area is smaller than the Barolo area with an annual production of around 35% of Barolo production which means that Barbaresco is not as widely available on the market.

The 2001 Barbaresco Sori Montaribaldi is even better than the Palazzina, more powerful on the nose with sweet and penetrating notes of licorice and chocolate, firmer and more sustained on the palate but with the tell-tale roundness and solidity of a high quality extraction. Drink: 2005-2017.

The 'azienda agricola Montaribaldi' is historically a family business, located in the middle of the Langhe hills in the small village of Barbaresco. The Montaribaldi winery has been owned by the Taliano family from the beginning and has 19 hectares in the Barberesco area. In 1994 Luciano and Roberto took over the company from their father and immediately decided to only produce high quality wines. It is still a real family business, father Guiseppe and mother Carla as well as the wives of the owners, Antonella and Franca all cooperate. At present they produce about 75000 bottles a year. Thanks to the perfect location of the vineyards of Montaribaldi and the typical white soil of the hills in Langhe, the elegant wines that come from them have a long life. Note that the land around the Montaribaldi vineyards is from Gaja. The family makes some of the most famous wines from the Piedmont region: Barbaresco DOCG, Barolo DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Roero Arneis. They offer a complete range of wines, from grapes typical of this region. Typical of this winery is that the wines have their origin in Piedmont, are always recognizable as a 'Montaribaldi' wine and are sustainably grown and produced. As they call it themselves: making 'vineyard wines' distinguishes them from others.
