Description
Luca is the private project of Laura Catena. Laura has made her mark on the wine world and is often called 'the face of Argentine wine', because she has done a lot for the country. She recently presented her 100-year plan: "I want every collector in the world to have Nicolás Catena Zapata in their cellar - that's my dream".
Another dream of Laura Catena was the foundation of Luca, named after her eldest son. With Luca she wants to make quality wines, where the perfect terroir, low yields per hectare and state-of-the-art winemaking are the key words. The vineyards of Luca are located at an altitude of 900 to 1500 meters and are among the highest in Mendoza. Here you can find old vines, which no longer produce much, but keep the quality of the vineyard (and therefore the wines) high. With this she wants to show the best expression of each grape variety. In total Luca has planted six grape varieties: Chardonnay, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
The grapes for the Laura Catena Luca Chardonnay 'G-Lot' come from 'Gualtallary', a vineyard in Tupungato, Mendoza. This made Laura Catena the first to make a chardonnay at an extreme altitude, namely 1500 meters above sea level. The soil is rocky and calcareous, which provides a vibrant minerality in the taste. Fermentation takes place spontaneously, 80% in oak barrels, 20% in stainless steel tanks at very low temperatures. The wine then undergoes malolactic conversion. This is done to soften the acids slightly and give the wine a rounder, creamier mouthfeel. The chardonnay then matures for twelve months 'sur lie' in oak barrels, of which 25% are new and the rest second-year oak. In the glass, the wine has a lemon yellow color. In the nose aromas of lemon cream, white peach, baked pear, vanilla and minerality. In the taste, the wood maturation comes to the fore with notes of toast, vanilla and nutmeg, complemented by tropical fruit (pineapple, melon and ripe apple). Delicious with dishes with fried mushrooms or butter sauce, for example pasta with mushroom cream sauce or sole fried in butter.

The 2020 G Lot Chardonnay comes from a warmer year when they picked 20 days earlier than usual. It fermented in French barrels where it matured for eight months. It has a very balsamic profile, it's still very young and the ripeness is contained, similar to the 2019 I tasted next to it. It's creamy and floral, with good freshness and a compact mouthfeel. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2020.

The 2021 G Lot Chardonnay is an elegant and harmonious Chardonnay produced with grapes from a plot in the Adrianna Vineyard from Gualtallary at 1,400 meters above sea level. It fermented in 500-liter oak barrels, where it matured for one year. It has a restrained and classical nose of barrel-fermented Chardonnay, faintly spicy and smoky with purity of fruit, very clean and precise. The wine is sharp and austere, fresh and with chalky minerality.
Luca is a separate project from the Catena family.

Creamy and flinty nose with lemon zest, pie crust, sour cream and a touch of meringue. Zesty and bright on the palate with a medium to full body and a zingy and lengthy finish. Limey and lightly creamy at the same time. Acid-driven but eclectic. Fruit from Gualtallary. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Chardonnay G-Lot originates from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley. It was aged in 80% French oak barrels, a quarter of them new. Yellow with a golden sheen. The nose presents basil and green apple aromas, complemented by hints of creamed corn and oak. The palate delivers a plush, indulgent experience, with a fresh, somewhat aqueous texture contributing to the elegant, easy-going mouthfeel.
