Description
Owned by the Vauthier family (Ch. Ausone) since 2014, this cru comprises a very small vineyard of 3.5 hectares and cellars carved out of the limestone rock of St. Emilion. It boasts a magnificent piece of predominantly clay-limestone terroir, located right next to Ch. Pavie Macquin in the centre of St. Emilion. Yields are kept very low (30hl/ha) and, as with Ch. Ausone, maturation is done in 85% new oak.
The 2021 La Clotte is a particularly beautiful, distinctly savoury wine. Bright notes of red plum, cherry, mint, orange peel, spices and cedar give this expressive and smoothly structured Saint-Émilion its character. What stands out is the texture, the layering and the elegant refinement of the wine. What a beautiful expression this is. Like many wines from 2021, La Clotte is exceptionally fragrant and aromatic.

This is very floral and fresh, with hints of lavender, violets, redcurrants and plums following through to a medium body with fine, round tannins that are soft and well integrated. Juicy finish. Drink or hold.

From: 2021 Bordeaux: L’Enfant Terrible (Feb 2024)
The 2021 La Clotte is a very pretty, intensely savory wine. Bright red plum, red cherry, mint, orange peel, spice and cedar all grace this super-expressive, pliant Saint-Émilion. I admire its textural depth, nuance and overall class. What a beautiful wine this is. Like so many 2021s, La Clotte is gorgeously perfumed and aromatic.

From: 2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)
The 2021 La Clotte is an attractive, soft wine. Bright red/purplish fruit, gentle spice, a touch of new oak and mocha come together nicely. The 2021 is a pretty, mid-weight La Clotte that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Franc aromatics, such a signature of this wine, aren't quite apparent. La Clotte does its malo in oak, and there is a bit of cooperage that needs to integrate.

From: Enticingly Fallible: Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur (May 2022)
The 2021 La Clotte was picked October 2 and 6 for the Merlot and Cabernet Franc, respectively, and matured entirely in new oak. It has a well-defined nose of black cherries and light blueberry fruit, floral as usual, though not as decadent as previous vintages (as expected). The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and good density, though maybe just missing a little amplitude and complexity on the finish at the moment. Fresh, yet you feel it is holding something back. Very correct.

With just 4 hectares, this property has a very long history that takes us back to the 16th century and the illustrious de Grailly family. La Clotte is also marked by its geography, that of a building leaning against the side of a cliff and concealing deep labyrinths. This feature gave it its name, La Clotte, meaning a small troglodyte habitat in Gascon patois. From the outside, this Château is distinguished by its neo-Gothic turret and its two lime trees, standing proudly in front of the house.
HAUTE-COUTURE WINE
Located behind the southern ramparts of the village of Saint-Émilion, this very old vineyard is formed of a patchwork of compact terraces resting on limestone plateaux and a clay-limestone slope. With a planting density of 6000 vines per hectare, the fifty-year-old vines enjoy southern exposure and are sheltered from the prevailing winds. Since it was bought in 2014, significant investment has been made in the cellar and vineyard. Based on plot selection, the wine of La Clotte is the result of manual harvesting, meticulous sorting of the harvest, gravity-flow grape reception, manual punching down and then submerged-cap maceration in stainless-steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation in oak is followed by around 18 months’ ageing in new barrels. The blend contains a large majority of Merlot, around 85%, complemented by Cabernet Franc.
Beyond the vintage effect, it is a rare wine due to the size of the vineyard and haute couture through its ability to combine elegant tannins with the voluptuous character that is so typical of Saint-Émilion. La Clotte produces wines with long ageing potential.
