2024 Bodegas Shaya Sauvignon Blanc

Bodegas Shaya was founded by Juan Gil. The Shaya Sauvignon Blanc is a white wine from the DO Rueda made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes from old vines with very minimal yields, planted in the southeastern part of the province of Segovia - in the south of the Rueda appellation. The Ruedo is becoming more and more popular for Sauvignon Blanc because the poor sandy soils force the roots of the old vines to go meters deep in search of water. This further enhances the minerality. The wine is made by Australian winemaker Belinda Thomson, from the Crawford River winery. After picking, the grapes are destemmed and transferred to a lightly crushed and pressed location. The juice is then clarified and transferred to stainless steel fermentation tanks where a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation takes place. After a short period in which the wine remains in contact with its yeasts (sur lie), the wine is bottled young to preserve the crisp and elegant varietal characteristics.

The Shaya is best known for its Verdejo and this Shaya Sauvignon is made in a much smaller edition and is almost impossible to find outside Spain. The Shaya Sauvignon Blanc has seductive and delicate aromas of tropical fruit, wild flowers, green apple and citrus peel that almost jump out of the glass. On the palate the wine is wonderfully fresh, fruity with aromas of white peach, green melon and grapefruit and all this with a wonderful fresh acidity. The Shaya Sauvignon Blanc is delicious with seafood such as oysters, shrimp, scallops, fish, sautéed green vegetables, salads and white meats including chicken, pork and turkey.

FACT: As of the 2021 vintage, the Shaya Sauvignon Blanc is organically certified.
