Description
The Puntido vineyards are owned by the Eguren family and the Puntido comes from only 1 vineyard where only the Tempranillo grape is grown. The vineyard is more than 45 years old and is located quite high. A sturdy, well-balanced red wine. Can be drunk, but will get better and better as the years go by and can certainly be imposed until 2030. The wine is aged for 16-18 months in French oak and then bottle-aged for a number of years before the wine is released onto the market. The Puntido vineyard is 25 Has. (61.74 acres) located at an altitude of 600 on a soils of a calcareous clay composition with a deep sandy rocky subsoil. The vineyard was planted in 1975 at a high density so that the vines have to work and root deeply in the face of competition. Biological fertilization every 2 years. The final yield is very low and only half of what is allowed with only 18.2 hl/ha. The production is completely ecological with respect for the environment according to the biorhythm of the plant. Extensive manual selection and harvest in crates with perfectly healthy, ripe grapes.
The Tempranillo grapes are harvested manually at the end of September with pre-fermentative maceration for 3 days at 6°C with indigenous yeast selected from the own vineyards, with very light pumping movements and light aeration to obtain complete extraction. The alcoholic fermentation takes about 10 days. and the temperature is regulated between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius and a post-fermentative maceration of approximately 8 days. After this, the wine is transferred to new French oak barrique barrels where malolactic fermentation will take place and the wine is allowed to mature for around 16 months in new French oak and then for another 6 months in a stainless steel tank and then the wine is bottle matured for another year before being bottled. becomes available (so approximately 3.5 years after harvest).
The Puntido has a dark garnet red color. The nose contains a multitude of scents and layers such as mineral notes, ripe fruit, liqueur and chocolate and a background of white flowers and a bit of leather. Furthermore, as the wines 'open' we still smell grilled bread, black cherries and berries. In the mouth it is powerful, with a good balance between ripe fruit and oak, with round tannins. The wine is full bodied and screams for roasted, grilled or baked (refined) meat. This beautiful wine is a gastronomic powerhouse. This is a nice 1.5 liter magnum.
The Spanish winery Viñedos de Paganos is an exclusive winery and is one of the beautiful wineries of Hermanos Eguren. FACT: In the Tab: Appendix you will find the official fact sheet of this wine.

The 2019 El Puntido was still very young and energetic, powerful with generous oak and plenty of tannins that need polishing and integration, which should be provided by the time in bottle. It has ripe berries and smoky notes, hints of shoe polish and a darker profile than the 2018 I tasted next to it and with incisive tannins. A powerful Tempranillo with stuffing and balance to mature in bottle. 37,995 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2021 and will be released in September 2022.

Deep violet. Dark berries, exotic spices and incense on the expansive nose, along with hints of pungent flowers and vanilla. Juicy and open-knit, offering sweet black and blue fruit, spicecake and mocha flavors that slowly firm up on the back half. Round, even tannins frame a long, spice-laced finish that leaves dark cherry and cassis notes behind.

Established in 1998 as a micro-project of the Eguren family’s Viñedos Sierra Cantabria, this bodega produces single-site wines from two vineyards, El Puntido and La Nieta, which are in the tiny village of Páganos. This is clearly a labor of love as the vineyards, mostly old Tempranillo, are impeccably maintained. Readers who appreciate more subtle oak influence might not be impressed with the wines when they are young, but I have found that patience yields great rewards when it comes to bringing things into harmony.

The Spanish winery Viñedos de Paganos is an exclusive winery in the medieval village of Laguardia and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. The winery is located in the subregion Rioja Alavesa at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria at about 600 meters altitude. The area is surrounded by dolmens, archaeological sites, chapels and old medieval churches.
Paganos winery has an underground cellar, located under the vineyards, carved into the rock.
The area has an Atlantic climate with continental nuances, and is sheltered from the cold winds from the north by the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. The soils of this estate, calcareous loam or clay loam with a high minerality in texture, give the vineyard, and therefore the wine, a unique mineral character with exceptional personality. Under this soil you can find a sandstone substrate where the roots are perfectly integrated.
Paganos winery was founded in 1998 by Marcos and Miguel Eguren, with the aim of producing great wines with great intrinsic characteristics and personality. The beautiful combination of climate, soil and vine varieties made this mission a complete success.
