Description
The Puntido vineyard is owned by the Eguren family and the Puntido comes from only 1 vineyard where only the Tempranillo grape is grown. The vineyard is more than 45 years old and is located quite high. A solid, well-balanced red wine. Can be drunk but will get better and better as the years go by.
The wine is aged for 16-18 months in French oak and then has a few more years of bottle ageing before being released. The Puntido vineyard is 25 Has. (61.74 acres) located at an altitude of 600 on a soil with a calcareous clay composition with a deep sandy rocky subsoil. The vineyard was planted in 1975 with a high density so that the vines have to work and have to root deeply due to the competition. Organic fertilization every 2 years. The final yield is very low and only half of what is allowed with only 18.2 hl/ha. The production is completely ecological with respect for the environment according to the biorhythm of the plant. Extensive manual selection and harvest in crates with perfectly healthy, ripe grapes.
The tempranillo grapes are harvested manually at the end of September with pre-fermentative maceration for 3 days at 6 ° C with indigenous yeast selected from their own vineyards, with very light pumping movements and a light aeration in order to obtain complete extraction. The alcoholic fermentation lasts about 10 days. and is temperature controlled between 28 and 30 grande celcius and a post-fermentative maceration of about 8 days. After this the wine is transferred to new French oak barriques barrels where the malolactic fermentation will take place and the wine is allowed to mature in the new French oak for about 16 months and then another 6 months in stainless steel tank and then the wine is given another year of bottle maturation before it becomes available (so about 3.5 years after the harvest).
The Puntido has a dark garnet red color. In the nose there is a multitude of scents and layers such as mineral tones, ripe fruit, liqueur and chocolate and a background of white flowers and a bit of leather. Furthermore, as the wines 'opens up' we smell grilled bread, black cherries and berries. In the mouth it is powerful, with a good balance between ripe fruit and oak, with round tannins. The wine is full bodied and cries out for roasted, grilled or baked (refined) meat. A gastronomic tyrant is this beautiful wine.

The 2020 El Puntido comes from the vineyard that names the wine and is 25 hectares at 600 meters above sea level. It is worked without herbicides or systemic products. The wine fermented in 2,000-liter oak vats and matured in new French oak barrels for 15 months, followed by another six months in tank before it was bottled. It's ripe and a little oaky, with a modern profile and a little more development in this warmer year. It has incisive tannins and a dry finish. Better with powerful food. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2022.

There is a smoky iodine touch reminiscent of mussels to the blackberries and dark cherries. Notes of dark chocolate, dried violets, graphite, licorice and a touch of orange peel. Full-bodied and tight, with lots of fine tannins and stacks of juicy black fruit. Long and caressing. Drink or hold.

From: The Many Riojas of Rioja: A Tale of Forking Paths (Apr 2024)
A complex and modern Rioja from winemaker Marcos Eguren, the 2020 El Puntido is 100% Tempranillo sourced from a vineyard planted in 1976 in Páganos, Rioja Alavesa. Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, it unveils complex aromas of bay leaf, lavender, blackberry and sour cherry, with hints of gunpowder against a cedar backdrop. Dry, taut and fairly structured, the intense and chalky palate lingers with a refreshing core and a lactic mouthfeel. The 2020 offers a rare combination of nuanced Tempranillo and calibrated winemaking.

The Spanish winery Viñedos de Paganos is an exclusive winery in the medieval village of Laguardia and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. The winery is located in the subregion Rioja Alavesa at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria at about 600 meters altitude. The area is surrounded by dolmens, archaeological sites, chapels and old medieval churches.
Paganos winery has an underground cellar, located under the vineyards, carved into the rock.
The area has an Atlantic climate with continental nuances, and is sheltered from the cold winds from the north by the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. The soils of this estate, calcareous loam or clay loam with a high minerality in texture, give the vineyard, and therefore the wine, a unique mineral character with exceptional personality. Under this soil you can find a sandstone substrate where the roots are perfectly integrated.
Paganos winery was founded in 1998 by Marcos and Miguel Eguren, with the aim of producing great wines with great intrinsic characteristics and personality. The beautiful combination of climate, soil and vine varieties made this mission a complete success.
