Winery Markus Molitor
Markus Molitor is among the absolute top winemakers in the Mosel region and is known for his meticulous Riesling precision. The family-run winery cultivates extremely steep slate slopes and low yields, with each plot being vinified individually. The color of the capsule indicates the style: Weisskapsel stands for dry. The wines combine power, finesse, and exceptional aging potential. More information about this winery can be found under the "Winery" tab.
2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ** Weisskapsel
A dry Auslese from the legendary Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyard, with great depth, minerality and longevity.
Molitor's Weisskapsel wine denotes a dry style (trocken), despite the Auslese designation. The grapes come from old vines in the steep, blue slate soils of the Sonnenuhr region. Optimal exposure and low yields create a combination of ripeness and tension. Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel with great attention to detail, followed by maturation that enhances structure and precision.
The Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyard
Zeltinger Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards on the Mosel. The steep slopes of weathered blue slate create a pronounced minerality and characteristic saline tension. In warm vintages, the vineyard yields intensely concentrated yet always elegant Rieslings with excellent cellaring potential.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a bright golden yellow color. The nose is deep and layered with ripe stone fruit, citrus zest, floral notes, and a subtle spiciness. On the palate, the attack is powerful and concentrated, followed by crystalline acidity that creates tension. The structure is taut and mineral, with a salty undertone and an exceptionally long, precise finish. Despite its intensity, the wine remains refined and elegant.

The 2018 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese ** (White Capsule) is pure, ripe and intense on the refined and elegant, flinty nose with its ripe and concentrated fruit and white asparagus aromas. Round and intense on the palate, with great purity and concentrated fruit aromas, this is a rich and powerful yet far too young and too reductive Sonnenuhr to tell about its true talents. The finish is tight and piquant yet still astringent and asks for years of bottle aging. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

History by Markus Molitor
The Molitor family has a deep-rooted history in winemaking that spans many generations. Markus Molitor represents the eighth generation of the Molitor legacy. The family's involvement in wine growing in the Moselle goes back to the 18th century. Markus Molitor officially took over the family estate in 1984 at the age of 20. Located in the Mosel wine region, the estate features steep vineyards along the Mosel River, a characteristic feature of the region. The Mosel is known for its steep, terraced vineyards. The slopes ensure optimal sunlight exposure and are an integral part of the unique terroir of the wines produced in this region.
Production by Markus Molitor
Markus Molitor has consciously chosen to focus on the Riesling grape variety, which is particularly well suited to the cool climate and slate soils of the Mosel. Riesling is known for its expressive aromatics, acidity and ability to reflect the terroir. Under the leadership of Markus Molitor, the estate underwent significant expansion and modernization. New vineyards were acquired and existing ones were carefully managed to ensure the highest quality fruit. The portfolio includes dry styles (Trocken), semi-dry and sweet wines, which emphasize the versatility of Riesling. The estate is known for its emphasis on wines from one specific vineyard. These wines highlight the distinctive characteristics of specific vineyards, known as "Grosses Gewächs" or "Erste Lage." Markus Molitor's dedication to quality and the unique expression of the terroir has earned the estate international fame. The wines are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for their authenticity and age-worthy characteristics. Markus Molitor respects traditional winemaking methods, including careful manual harvesting and gentle processing of the grapes. At the same time, he applies modern techniques to further improve the quality of the wines.
