history of the Travaglini winery and the Gattinara region

Travaglini is a family-run winery that has been a leader in Alto Piemonte for generations. Since the 1950s, the estate has dedicated itself to the production of Nebbiolo, with a focus on precision, tradition and terroir. The winery is known for its iconic bottle shape and classic style. The Gattinara region, in northern Piedmont, enjoys a unique microclimate and a rich history dating back to Roman times. Here, Nebbiolo grapes find optimal conditions for slow ripening and the development of deep complexity.

location and terroir of the Vigna Ronchi vineyard

The Vigna Ronchi is one of the most historic and prestigious parcels in Gattinara. The vineyard is almost entirely owned by Travaglini and is located at about 400 meters above sea level. The plantings date from 1969 and 1982, which makes the average age of the vines very favorable for concentrated yields. The terroir is exceptional: mineral-rich volcanic soils provide a unique structure and aromatic complexity. Thanks to the south-eastern to south-western exposure and the local microclimate, the grapes ripen slowly and evenly, while maintaining freshness and balance.

Travaglini's style and philosophy in this wine

With Vigna Ronchi, Travaglini introduces for the first time in its history a Gattinara Riserva from a single vineyard, rather than a blend of several plots. This approach marks a new phase in which the emphasis is on the pure expression of terroir. The wine combines traditional methods with subtle innovation, such as aging in concrete vats, to make the most of the character of the plot.

grapes, harvest and vinification of the 2019 Vigna Ronchi Riserva

The wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo, carefully harvested by hand from selected bunches. The harvest is manual and strict, with a focus on ripeness and health of the fruit. After the harvest, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The skin maceration lasts approximately 30 to 35 days, which ensures maximum extraction of colour, tannins and aromas, without over-extraction.

maturation and aging process

The Vigna Ronchi Riserva undergoes an extended maturation: approximately 48 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. Approximately 10% of the wine is aged separately in French barriques for added complexity. After this wood aging, an innovative phase in concrete vats follows, intended to enhance the fruit character and clarity of the wine. Finally, the wine matures in bottle for another 12 months to achieve full harmony. This slow build-up creates a wine with depth, freshness and an exceptional ageing potential.

aroma, color and taste of the Vigna Ronchi Riserva 2019

The colour is classic ruby red with a light transparency, typical of Nebbiolo. The bouquet opens with intense aromas of ripe red fruits such as cherries and plums, complemented by floral notes, refined spices and characteristic minerality from the volcanic soil. On the palate the wine is elegant and complex, with silky tannins, lively acidity and a remarkably harmonious, long-lasting finish. The balance between power and finesse makes this wine both drinkable young after decanting and suitable for long-term bottle ageing.

character, potential and presentation

With its powerful structure, lively acidity and layered aromatic profile, Vigna Ronchi has an excellent ageing potential of at least 15 years. The wine is bottled in Travaglini’s characteristic bottle, a design that not only provides recognition but also helps protect the wine. The packaging is elegant, with gold and bronze accents that refer to the selection and vineyard origin. The wines are bottled in Travaglini’s well-known shaped bottles, and individually packed in a case.

Travaglini is the largest producer in the small production area of Gattinara. They make refined wines that are bottled in bottles with a special curved shape.

Nebbiolo is the king grape of the Piedmont. Its refinement and complexity, but above all its ability to reproduce the terroir in the wines makes it very popular with winemakers. This is also the case with Clemente Travaglini, a winegrower in the far north of the Piedmont. He sold his grapes to other winemakers, but in 1920 decided to set up his own winery in the centre of Gattinara. His passion for making characteristic, high-quality wines ensures that Gattinara is increasingly known as a wine region, which eventually leads to DOC status in 1967 and DOCG status in 1990.

In 1958, grandson Giancarlo took over the helm from his father Arturo. He made major changes to the cellars and vineyards. Equipment is renewed, vineyards are replanted and pruning methods are adapted, greatly increasing the quality of the wines. Giancarlo also designed a special model of wine bottle, the 'crooked bottle', in which the sediment remains in the bottle automatically due to a kink in the bottle when pouring older wines. Together with his daughter Cinzia, her father's equally passionate successor, he develops two top wines in which the special terroir is central: the Gattinara Tre Vigne and the Il Sogno.

Travaglini's wines are characterized by their precision and refinement, with great subtlety and made with a strong eye for detail. The vineyards are located in the 'Alto Piemonte' on the foothills of the Monte Rosa, and are therefore also called 'mountain Nebbiolos'. Yet the vineyards are not higher than other vineyards in, for example, Barolo. The name mainly refers to the influence of the nearby mountains, which give the wines a very fine structure, a pure freshness and a long aging potential. The Alps protect the vineyards from the cold northerly winds, but at the same time provide a constant breeze. The mineral-rich soil also contributes to the uniqueness of the wines: Gattinara is the only area where the Nebbiolo grows on a volcanic soil. This gives the wines a remarkably pure, mineral character with fresh acidity.
