Description
Travaglini's Gattinara Riserva 2020 is a refined red wine from the Gattinara DOCG in Piedmont, Italy, made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. Subdued aromas of violets, cherry stones, rhubarb, and licorice. The nose is almost austere, like the great wines of the past, but on the palate, the tannins flow ripely and velvetily, with just enough texture to clearly identify the Nebbiolo.
The wine is full-bodied and fresh, with a taut yet beautifully integrated acidity that maintains the tension until the very end. The finish is restrained yet precise and long, with subtle hints of mint. A wine clearly made for the long term and will be at its best in five to ten years.
The wine is bottled in the iconic bottle specially designed by Giancarlo Travaglini.

The Travaglini 2015 Gattinara Riserva is showing beautifully right now, thanks to its aromatic depth and intensity and the silky impression it leaves on the palate. The wine is so true to Nebbiolo, with wild cherry and plum backed by tar, spice and powdered licorice. It also remains truthful to the vintage with a joyous and fruit-filled exuberance. If you are new to the Gattinara appellation and you love Nebbiolo, you would do well to try this wine (in its trademarked asymmetrical bottle). Some 20,000 bottles were released.

Restrained violets, cherry pits, rhubarb and licorice. It is almost austere on the nose, like the great wines of the past, but then on the palate the tannins flow ripe and velvety, dusty enough so you can recognize nebbiolo. Full-bodied and crisp, with tight yet integrated acidity that keeps tension up at the end. Austere in the finish yet precise and long, with whiffs of mint. A wine intended for the long haul. Best in five to 10 years.

From: Alto Piemonte: Small Is Beautiful (Feb 2024)
The 2018 Gattinara Riserva is seriously impressive, especially considering it is Antoniolo's entry-level Gattinara. Deep, layered and dynamic in the glass, the 2018 has so much to offer. Macerated red cherry, menthol, licorice, spice, cedar and leather fill out the layers. This is all class—the hidden gem in this range.
- By Antonio Galloni on November 2023
Antoniolo remains a reference point for Gattinara and Alto Piemonte. As always, the Castelle and San Francesco have a touch of French oak sheen that renders the wines very easy to enjoy on the young side. The Osso San Grato is aged entirely in cask and, therefore, has more classic lines. It remains one of the benchmark wines of Gattinara and Alto Piemonte. As good as the single-vineyard bottlings are, readers should not pass up the straight Gattinara, which is now also released as a Riserva. It’s a fine introduction to this stellar range.

Travaglini is the largest producer in the small production area of Gattinara. They make refined wines that are bottled in bottles with a special curved shape.
Nebbiolo is the king grape of the Piedmont. Its refinement and complexity, but above all its ability to reproduce the terroir in the wines makes it very popular with winemakers. This is also the case with Clemente Travaglini, a winegrower in the far north of the Piedmont. He sold his grapes to other winemakers, but in 1920 decided to set up his own winery in the centre of Gattinara. His passion for making characteristic, high-quality wines ensures that Gattinara is increasingly known as a wine region, which eventually leads to DOC status in 1967 and DOCG status in 1990.
In 1958, grandson Giancarlo took over the helm from his father Arturo. He made major changes to the cellars and vineyards. Equipment is renewed, vineyards are replanted and pruning methods are adapted, greatly increasing the quality of the wines. Giancarlo also designed a special model of wine bottle, the 'crooked bottle', in which the sediment remains in the bottle automatically due to a kink in the bottle when pouring older wines. Together with his daughter Cinzia, her father's equally passionate successor, he develops two top wines in which the special terroir is central: the Gattinara Tre Vigne and the Il Sogno.
Travaglini's wines are characterized by their precision and refinement, with great subtlety and made with a strong eye for detail. The vineyards are located in the 'Alto Piemonte' on the foothills of the Monte Rosa, and are therefore also called 'mountain Nebbiolos'. Yet the vineyards are not higher than other vineyards in, for example, Barolo. The name mainly refers to the influence of the nearby mountains, which give the wines a very fine structure, a pure freshness and a long aging potential. The Alps protect the vineyards from the cold northerly winds, but at the same time provide a constant breeze. The mineral-rich soil also contributes to the uniqueness of the wines: Gattinara is the only area where the Nebbiolo grows on a volcanic soil. This gives the wines a remarkably pure, mineral character with fresh acidity.
