Gattinara DOCG

This Nebbiolo from the cool region near the Alps offers a refined, almost Burgundy-like style.

The Gattinara DOCG 2021 embodies the essence of the terroir and the unique style of Gattinara. The grapes for this wine come from different plots, located on south to south-west facing slopes between 350 and 400 meters altitude. The cool nights and volcanic soil give the wine a refined, mineral character with refreshing acidity.

Vinification and Maturation

After harvesting, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 30 months in large traditional Slavonian oak barrels. This process results in a very refined nose with aromas of juicy red cherries, roses, violets and subtle spicy notes, with minerality and a hint of licorice in the background. The taste is elegant and delicate, with small red fruits, flowers, fine acidity and ripe tannins. The wine is bottled in the bottle specially designed by Giancarlo Travaglini.

Tasting notes

Visual: Bright ruby red in colour, with an attractive delicate transparency. Olfactory: Soft floral aromas, ranging from violets to rose petals, with spicy and balsamic notes developing. The finish offers mineral and iron notes. Palate: Elegant balance between freshness, refined tannins and a subtle, long-lasting presence of small red fruits, flowers and fruit jelly.

The Gattinara DOCG is an example of the passion and dedication that Travaglini puts into every bottle, respecting Gattinara's unique terroir.

Travaglini is the largest producer in the small production area of Gattinara. They make refined wines that are bottled in bottles with a special curved shape.

Nebbiolo is the king grape of the Piedmont. Its refinement and complexity, but above all its ability to reproduce the terroir in the wines makes it very popular with winemakers. This is also the case with Clemente Travaglini, a winegrower in the far north of the Piedmont. He sold his grapes to other winemakers, but in 1920 decided to set up his own winery in the centre of Gattinara. His passion for making characteristic, high-quality wines ensures that Gattinara is increasingly known as a wine region, which eventually leads to DOC status in 1967 and DOCG status in 1990.

In 1958, grandson Giancarlo took over the helm from his father Arturo. He made major changes to the cellars and vineyards. Equipment is renewed, vineyards are replanted and pruning methods are adapted, greatly increasing the quality of the wines. Giancarlo also designed a special model of wine bottle, the 'crooked bottle', in which the sediment remains in the bottle automatically due to a kink in the bottle when pouring older wines. Together with his daughter Cinzia, her father's equally passionate successor, he develops two top wines in which the special terroir is central: the Gattinara Tre Vigne and the Il Sogno.

Travaglini's wines are characterized by their precision and refinement, with great subtlety and made with a strong eye for detail. The vineyards are located in the 'Alto Piemonte' on the foothills of the Monte Rosa, and are therefore also called 'mountain Nebbiolos'. Yet the vineyards are not higher than other vineyards in, for example, Barolo. The name mainly refers to the influence of the nearby mountains, which give the wines a very fine structure, a pure freshness and a long aging potential. The Alps protect the vineyards from the cold northerly winds, but at the same time provide a constant breeze. The mineral-rich soil also contributes to the uniqueness of the wines: Gattinara is the only area where the Nebbiolo grows on a volcanic soil. This gives the wines a remarkably pure, mineral character with fresh acidity.
