Description
about Shafer Vineyards
Since 1978, Shafer Vineyards has been one of Napa Valley's most respected wineries. Located in the Stags Leap District, one of California's most prestigious appellations, the estate is renowned for its precision, sustainability, and terroir expression. Shafer's wines combine power and elegance and are recognized worldwide as a benchmark for modern Napa wines.
the story behind Relentless
Relentless is named in honor of Elias Fernandez, who has worked at Shafer since 1984. The name reflects his unwavering dedication and passion in the vineyard and cellar. A staple in Shafer's collection since 1999, the wine consistently demonstrates a deep, dark style with power and layering. The blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah produces a wine with both power and structure, rich in fruit, spice, and complexity.
vineyards and terroir
The grapes for Relentless are sourced from the southern foothills of Napa Valley, in the Stags Leap District. Here, the combination of volcanic soils, limestone, and clay ensures optimal drainage and concentration. The microclimate, with warm days and cool nights, helps the grapes retain their aromatic intensity and natural acidity. The vines are low-growing to produce small, concentrated berries.
grape varieties and harvest
The 2019 Relentless is composed of 89% Syrah and 11% Petite Sirah. The Syrah contributes floral notes, black olive, and spice, while the Petite Sirah provides structure and depth. 2019 was a relatively cool and long growing season, resulting in slow ripening, perfect phenolic balance, and intense fruit.
vinification and maturation
After careful selection, the grapes were completely destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matured for 30 months in 100% new French oak barriques. This long aging resulted in rounded tannins, structure, and added complexity, with subtle notes of cedar, smoke, and vanilla that blend with the dark fruit.
review by The Wine Advocate
The Wine Advocate awarded the 2019 Relentless 93+ points. Joe Czerwinski described the wine as "full-bodied, tannic, sturdy stuff that needs time to develop, but packed with fruit." He calls the nose "briary, with herbal complexities from the Syrah, vibrant purple-raspberry fruit, and perhaps a touch of blueberry from the Petite Sirah." This assessment underscores the power, tension, and concentration of this vintage. The wine is intense and robust, yet with sufficient fruit and structure to develop beautifully over the next two decades. Recommended for drinking from 2026 to 2040.
color, smell and taste
The 2019 Relentless has a deep purple-black color. The nose opens with ripe blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, and violet notes, followed by hints of black pepper, spice, and subtle woodiness. The palate is full, layered, and intense. The structure is firm yet refined, with powerful tannins well supported by a core of ripe fruit. The finish is long, mineral, and complex, with notes of pure cocoa and spicy earth.

“... a bold, flamboyant wine that seems to have put on even more density over the last year, hard as that may seem to believe. Black cherry, licorice, spice, leather and menthol are all amped up in this decidedly opulent, full-throttle Syrah-based wine.”
— Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“ … a deep garnet-purple color and fragrant notes of cracked black pepper, licorice and violets over a core of plum preserves, Black Forest cake and mulberries plus an earthy waft of tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has lovely purity and freshness, featuring ripe, rounded tannins and lots of pepper and spice layers, finishing refreshingly savory.”
— Lisa Perrott-Brown, The Wine Advocate
“Deep and powerfully built, with a rich and polished texture that highlights wild berry and blueberry flavors that show notes of espresso, smoky beef and black pepper. Finishes with big but refined tannins.”
— Tim Fish, Wine Spectator
“This is a burly, muscular yet sophisticated wine, showing complex characteristics of black pepper, clove and garrigue. Woody oak underscores a robust palate of black plum, game and savory herb, with a velvety texture throughout. It’s a blend of 86% Syrah and 14% Petite Sirah. Enjoy from 2027 – 2030. Cellar Selection. ”
— Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast
“Aromas of saucy plums, black currants, roasted figs, with these deep, dark, earthy tones, charcoal and graphite. Big and bold on the palate, juicy tannins, moderate acidity, it is boastful but nuanced with suave, tangy currant and plum fruit. Complex notes of mesquite, beef jerky, mint, leather, rocky elements that are delicious and fascinating to pull out. I feel like these need quite a bit of time to show their best – I think this will be beautiful in eight to 10 years.”
— Isaac James Baker, Terroirist.com
“Savory aromas of dark chocolate, spice, leather, cured meat, & black cherry. Flavors add charcoal & garrigue. Full-bodied and powerful with rich, softish, but drying, texture. Will age.”

From: Napa Valley: The Frantic 2020s & Stunning 2021s (Feb 2023)
The 2019 Relentless is gorgeous. Bright and intensely savory, the 2019 bristles with energy. Black pepper, sage, tobacco, incense and dried herbs lend tons of nuance to this expressive Syrah/Petite Sirah blend. There's quite a bit of energy here and also a bit less heft than most previous vintages, a reflection of a move towards slightly cooler sites.
- By Antonio Galloni on October 2022
Shafer was among the estates that chose to not harvest a single grape in 2020, so the range was a bit limited when I stopped by recently. No matter, the bottled 2019s are fabulous, while the young 2021s hold a great deal of potential. Over the last few years longtime winemaker Elias Fernandez has given these wines, the Cabernets in particular, an added touch of freshness that works to well to balance the generosity that is such a Shafer signature.

From: The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets: A Deep Dive (Jan 2022)
The 2019 Relentless is a dense, explosive wine. It possesses stunning depth and energy, a combination that works so well here. Naturally the fruit is still very primary, but the 2019 is clearly a wine of tremendous balance and harmony. I can't wait to see how it ages. A closing aromatic flourish rounds things out in style, suggesting a bright future lies ahead.

Shafer Vineyards was founded in 1972 when, after a successful career in publishing, John Shafer, along with his son Doug, purchased vineyards on the Silverado Trail in Napa Valley. They purchased 84 acres, 12 of which were planted with vines.A program of replanting and replanting was immediately carried out. From their inception, the Shafers have been very innovative. The aim was to arrive at a completely natural way of growing grapes and making wine. By growing clover and peas, which, in addition to preventing erosion, also form a rich humus layer, bees and other insects are attracted, which ensure optimal pollination and a natural environment. This prevents the use of pesticides. Winemaker Elias Fernandez has been with Shafer since 1994 and is considered one of the most talented winemakers in Napa. Since 2004, Shafer has been the first company in Napa to be completely self-sufficient in energy by installing solar panels on the winery. Shafer has vineyards in several AVAs of Napa Valley such as the famous Stags Leap District surrounding the winery, Yountville and vineyards in the hills towards the eastern Vaca Mountains.
