Description
The Niellon family has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 19th century when the family was founded by Michel Niellon’s grandfather, Léon Niellon. In the 1960s, Michel Niellon took over the family business from his father, Marcel Niellon, and has continued the tradition of producing exceptional Burgundy wines. The estate has six hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. The vineyards are located at varying altitudes between 200 and 400 metres, which contributes to the unique character of their wines.
Domaine Michel Niellon is characterized by meticulous attention to detail. Both the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay are hand-picked and rigorously selected for quality. The fermentation process is initiated using the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. The wines are matured in French oak barrels, with a portion of new wood (usually 15% to 30%). Malolactic conversion and Sur Lie also take place in these wooden barrels. Domaine Michel Niellon is known for producing high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. Their icon, the Bâtard-Montrachet, is highly regarded. In addition, the Chassagne-Montrachet's of these products are known worldwide for their exceptional quality.
One of the Premier Cru domains of the year from Burgundy is Niellon. Classically made chardonnay from Chassagne Montrachet. A domain that has grown into a producer of top wines in the shelter of recent years. The Chassagne-Montrachet Clos de la Maltroie 1er Cru 2022 is a very classic, tight, mineral-driven wine. The taste is well balanced with beautifully integrated oak at the entrance. Fresh and salty, with sufficient grip towards the finish, with just a hint of grilled walnut and fine length. Top wine that will lose its wild hair with a few years of bottle aging.

Notes of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, toasted nuts and pastry cream preface the 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie, a medium to full-bodied, bright and satiny wine with fine depth at the core, tangy acids and good grip on the delicately oak-inflected finish.
It was with sadness that I learned of the passing of Michel Niellon while this report was going to press. He must have been content, however, to leave the domaine in such good hands, as his son-in-law, Michel Coutoux, is routinely producing wines of impressively consistent quality and style. 2019 is another fine success, delivering beautifully balanced wines with plenty of concentration and cut. As readers may remember, house fingerprint here is distinctive, with a touch of toasty oak from Saint-Romain's Tonnellerie Gillet marking each cuvée and the wines dependably distinguishing themselves with lovely texture and concentration. This is a domaine in fine form today, and as I've written before, readers who have fallen out of touch with the wines are advised to reacquaint themselves with this excellent producer.

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos de la Maltroie 1er Cru is actually more backward on the nose compared to the Village Cru, tightly coiled with mineral-driven, malic fruit. The palate is well balanced with neatly integrated oak on the entry. Fresh and saline, there’s ample grip toward the finish, with just a touch of grilled walnut and fine length. Excellent. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London.
