Mas Martinet was born in 1981, a life project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now owned by the entire family Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, Pilar. The unique wines of Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous aging potential. For more than 25 years, Martinet has been at the top of the Priorat appellation. For several years now, father Pérez has retired from Mas Martinet and the wines are vinified by Sara Perez (see also Venus, Dido and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another Icon namely Rene Barbier Jr known from Clos Mogador and Rene and Sara also make wines under their own names namely under Sara Pérez y René Barbier. Of course we also carry these wines.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the small town of Gratallops. The land, which contains slate, and the different exposures of the vineyard each year give this wine the typical character of an estate. Mas Martinet is one of the pioneers of the new Priorat, the project of the Pérez family. Since 2017 they no longer use a sorting table and do not do pied de cuve, but all their fermentations are with the yeasts of the grapes; and they stopped cooling the grapes 15 years ago. From 2006 to 2016, they increased the number of full bunches in their fermentations, all of which are now 100% full bunches for all wines except the Martinet Bru.
They have 25 acres of vineyards in five different locations that are grown organically and biodynamically using permaculture and regenerative farming. The Martinet Bru comes partly from an estate called Mas Seró, located in the area of Masos de Falset, the estate of Serra Alta, at an altitude of 400 m and facing southwest, and an estate located in Torroja, which is colder and deeper . It is a blend of Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Sirà and a little bit of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon made naturally organic / biodynamic without chemicals.
The Cami Pesseroles is named after the vineyard where the Garnacha and Cariñena grapes come from, a plot planted together in 1939. The Cami Pesseroles is the old path that surrounds the three small vineyards where the vines of 95 years (!) are located between Porrera and Gratallops. Two grapes, Carinena (60%) and Garnacha (40%) form the basis here on a very poor subsoil full of rock. Very low production, only 2 hectares with a naturally low yield due to the age of the sticks in combination with the structure of the soil, resulting in an enormous concentration in the glass. Whole bunches were foot trod then fermented in two 500 liter barrel open chestnut casks with native yeasts for nearly three weeks. The wine was pressed and aged in 650 liter chestnut and acacia, cherry and oak barrels. The wine has only 13.5% alcohol and has a very elegant and fresh style. The wines are precise, aromatic and open. That's surprisingly elegant for Cariñena, a grape that almost always has a rustic touch. Only around 2,000 bottles of the Cami Pesseroles are ever made. Pure minerality and rustic with a tribute to the Priorat. A very nice bouquet of raspberry, black currant, rosemary, cocoa, soft impression of vanilla and a pleasant smoky undertone. Silky smooth onset to an incredibly long mineral finish. Clearly a wine with great storage potential, but also a very impressive experience in the youth.
