Description
In 1981 Mas Martinet was born, a life project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now in the hands of the entire family Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, Pilar. The unique wines of Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous storage potential. For more than 25 years Martinet has been at the top of the Priorat appellation. For a few years now father Pérez has withdrawn from Mas Martinet and the wines are vinified by Sara Perez (see also Venus, Dido and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another icon namely Rene Barbier Jr known from Clos Mogador and Rene and Sara also make wines under their own names namely Sara Pérez y René Barbier. Of course we also carry these wines.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the town of Gratallops. The land, which contains slate, and the different exposures of the vineyard give this wine the typical character of an estate each year. Mas Martinet is one of the pioneers of the new Priorat, the project of the Pérez family. Since 2017, they no longer use a sorting table and do not do pied de cuve, but all their fermentations are with the yeasts of the grapes; and they stopped cooling the grapes 15 years ago. From 2006 to 2016, they increased the number of full bunches in their fermentations, which are now all 100% full bunches for all wines except the Martinet Bru.
They have 25 hectares of vineyards in five different locations that are farmed organically and biodynamically with permaculture and regenerative agriculture. The Martinet Bru comes partly from an estate called Mas Seró, located in the area of Masos de Falset, the estate of Serra Alta, at an altitude of 400m and facing southwest, and an estate located in Torroja, which is colder and deeper. It is a blend of Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Sirà and a little bit of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon of course made organically/biodynamically without chemicals.
The Els Escurçons is a tribute to Priorat before the phylloxera, when people worked in the higher areas and especially the Garnacha. The wine is a 100% Garnacha from a vineyard at 600 meters altitude. The highest estate of Priorat on an iron-rich slate land. They are still original ungrafted vines. It is an exceptionally fine and elegant wine that shows the most beautiful slope of Priorat. Fermented in amphorae and also matured in glass demijohns. It is a wine that shows the typical structure, power and rusticity of the Priorat, but with elegance, delicate ripeness that is only possible from grapes from extremely old vines. The Els Escurçons has a beautiful nose of fine red fruit such as wild strawberries and raspberries and is particularly refined and elegant in the mouth. The wine has a long, fresh, elegant grand aftertaste. This is a top Grenache as you rarely come across with a great storage potential. Only around 3,500 wines of this fantastic wine are made.

The 2019 Els Escurçons comes from a 20-year-old vineyard, a massal selection of old Garnacha from the village of Porrera on south- and southwest-facing terraces of ferruginous decomposed llicorella slate. In June 2015, 30 hectares of forest around the vineyard burned down, and 10% of the vines died. The vineyard expression has been coming back since 2016, but they feel it has changed, as the vegetation around it has disappeared. The first two vintages after the fire showed anger and stress, and in 2018, they noticed a change that seems to continue in 2019. But then 2019 was very unusual, incredibly concentrated but only 13.5% alcohol and surprisingly tannic. This is a wine that matures in glass demijohn and ceramic jars. Another unusual wine from an unusual harvest here. 3,800 bottles produced.
In 2020, they lost 86% of the crop to mildew and black rot, so they implemented a lot of changes in 2021. Both 2019 and 2020 are atypical vintages here.

Bright-rimmed ruby. Mineral-accented aromas of fresh red and blue fruits, along with suggestions of exotic spices, potpourri and licorice. Stains the palate with sappy, mineral-accented black raspberry, cherry and mulberry flavors, while smoky minerality adds energetic lift and spine. Polished tannins shape the finish, which clings with excellent tenacity and resonating mineral, spice and floral notes. All whole clusters.

Sara Pérez runs Mas Martinet, established in 1989 by her father, Josep Luis Pérez Ovejero, one of Priorat’s founding fathers. Based in Falset, the family owns 22 hectares of high-altitude, slate-rich vineyards in Gratallops. They make three single-vineyard bottlings and an entry-level blend called Martinet Bru. Pérez is among the most innovative winemakers in a region that has no shortage of them. All of the vineyards are farmed organically and the wines, which are on the distinctly elegant side for Priorat, are made with native yeasts and no added enzymes. Sara Pérez was among the first here to use clay amphoras, a practice that has caught on across Spain. The vines are almost all very old, thus their yield is quite small and the single-site wines aren’t usually easy to find. Mas Martinet is one of the leading estates in Spain, by my estimation.

At Mas Martinet, all chemicals in the vineyards have been banned. Sara and her team at Martinet are always looking for new perspectives, with a culture based on balance, sustainability and harmony with nature. Deeply committed to tradition, to the environment and to people. They recover some varieties and reinvent some processes and materials according to the principles of agroecology and minimal intervention with maximum respect for the people who work on it. They process the crops in an environmentally friendly manner, treating the processes as respectfully as possible. Examples include growing legumes and wild species of flowers and shrubs in order to provide food for the entire chain. they base us on the lunar calendar to optimize (bio-dynamic) the natural treatments we use in the vineyard, such as compost and herbal infusions.

The land, which contains slate, and the different exposures of the vineyard each year give this wine the typical character of an estate. Garnatxa Negra, Cariñnyena, Garnatxa Peluda and Sirà, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine press is unanimous in its praise for the wines of this iconic house. Wines getting points close to the maximum limit of 100 points is standard rather than exceptional. Supply from the relatively small stamp vineyards is very limited and the storage potential of the wines is unprecedentedly long.
