Mas Martinet was born in 1981, a life project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now owned by the entire family Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, Pilar. The unique wines of Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous aging potential. For more than 25 years, Martinet has been at the top of the Priorat appellation. For several years now, father Pérez has retired from Mas Martinet and the wines are vinified by Sara Perez (see also Venus, Dido and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another Icon namely Rene Barbier Jr known from Clos Mogador and Rene and Sara also make wines under their own names namely under Sara Pérez y René Barbier . Of course we also carry these wines.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the small town of Gratallops. The land, which contains slate, and the different exposures of the vineyard each year give this wine the typical character of an estate. Mas Martinet is one of the pioneers of the new Priorat, the project of the Pérez family. Since 2017 they no longer use a sorting table and do not do pied de cuve, but all their fermentations are with the yeasts of the grapes; and they stopped cooling the grapes 15 years ago. From 2006 to 2016, they increased the number of full bunches in their fermentations, all of which are now 100% full bunches for all wines except the Martinet Bru.
They have 25 acres of vineyards in five different locations that are grown organically and biodynamically using permaculture and regenerative farming. The Martinet Bru comes partly from an estate called Mas Seró, located in the area of Masos de Falset, the estate of Serra Alta, at an altitude of 400 m and facing southwest, and an estate located in Torroja, which is colder and deeper . It is a blend of Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Sirà and a little bit of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon made naturally organic / biodynamic without chemicals.
The flagship Clos Martinet is the wine that started it all and is still a blend of Garnacha (Tinta and Peluda), Syrah, Cariñena, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Monastrell as it has been since the beginning of this now iconic wine. It is Elegance with a capital E and has many similarities with, among others, a Clos Mogador (yes, Sara's wife, namely Rene Barbier). Clos Martinet is a terraced vineyard of only five hectares planted in 1986 on a llicorella slate terroir with a lot of iron and large rocks in the soil. The varieties, depending on the date picked, are fermented at three different maturation times in two 200 liter concrete vats and oak barrels with native yeast and whole bunches. At the beginning and end of the élevage it stays in concrete and in between they used oak barrels of 2,000 and 4,100 liters and about 20% glass demijohns and amphorae. The wine is subtle and insinuating. It is medium-bodied, fresh and balanced. Dark ruby red color with dark fruit aromas along with graphite and espresso. Both the nose and the taste are very complex. This is a very elegant Clos Martinet. It is a deep, warm, flavorful and elegant wine. The most classic and recognizable Priorat.
