History of the Schäfer‑Fröhlich winery

Schäfer‑Fröhlich is an excellent family business in the Nahe with a wine tradition that spans generations. Under the leadership of Tim Fröhlich since the early 1990s, the house developed a strong focus on terroir expression and extremely low yields per hectare. This led to internationally recognized Rieslings of exceptional quality. With a small team, Tim still works in the vineyard and in the cellar, dedicated to absolute top class.

Region and location: Monzinger Felsenberg

The Felsenberg is one of the premium “Grosses Gewächs” slopes of Schäfer‑Fröhlich in Monzingen. The soil consists of weathered red slate, porphyry and rhyolite with an exceptionally poor, stony profile. The steep, south-west-facing terraces create a microclimate in which the roots penetrate deeply. This causes natural stress to the vines, resulting in wines with concentrated acidity, intense minerality and refined structure.

Climate and soil in the Nahe region

The Nahe region has a cool continental climate, with marked differences between warm days and cooler nights. The Felsenberg receives optimum sunlight through the terraces, which in combination with the stony soil ensures controlled ripening. This combination promotes wines with sparkling acidity, pronounced minerality and a long life.

Production process of the 2023 Felsenberg Riesling GG

The grapes are harvested entirely by hand in small baskets and rigorously selected. After a soft pressing, the must ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for several months on the fine lees to develop additional complexity, texture and depth. Without filtration or clarification, the full wine character is preserved. Production is limited, which contributes to the exclusivity of this GG wine.

Analysis of smell, color and taste of the 2023 edition

In the glass, the wine shows itself with a clear, silvery yellow color and a crystalline shine. In the nose, aromas of green lemon, lime zest, wet stone, white blossom and subtle herbal accents unfold. The scent is tight, deep and intense, with a mineral tension that is immediately noticeable.

On the palate, the 2023 Felsenberg GG is dry and powerful, with precise, sparkling acidity. The mineral core is clearly present in combination with citrus fruit, green apple and a hint of flint. The finish is clean, elegant and long-lasting, with a light saltiness and fine bitters that provide balance and complexity. The wine has tension, finesse and volume in perfect harmony.

Drinking advice and storage potential

This Grand Cru Felsenberg is at its best between 2026 and 2028, when the tight minerality harmoniously blends with riper fruit tones. Thanks to the powerful structure, chalky acids and measured concentration, the wine can mature without any problems until at least 2060. For the enthusiast who drinks the wine young: decant a few hours in advance or open the bottle well in advance to open up the aromatic richness.

The global demand for Schäfer-Fröhlich wines is constantly increasing, as is the quality. Every new year seems like a new milestone for what Tim Fröhlich is capable of. The wines are exceptionally beautiful, perfectly balanced and have fantastic fruit. The success of Schäfer-Fröhlich is huge. For example, his dry riesling and the spätlese riesling were both named the best in Germany at the 'Königsdisziplinen des deutschen Rieslings' and in the Gault Millau 2013 his spätleses finished in 1st and 4th place.

Tim Fröhlich is called 'the master of spontaneous fermentation', and according to the Gault Millau, the prices of his wines in an international context are 'a joke'. And as Eichelmann says in his eponymous guide: "The wines are getting better and better, have even more precision. Both the dry and the noble sweet Rieslings from Schäfer-Fröhlich are the best in Germany.'
