Description
History of the Schäfer‑Fröhlich winery
Schäfer‑Fröhlich is a family business on the Nahe with generations of wine tradition. Tim Fröhlich became internationally famous in the 1990s through his focus on terroir expression and extremely low yields per hectare. He still actively sets the course, supported by a small team that strives exclusively for top quality.
Region and location: Monzinger Felseneck
The Monzinger Felseneck is a Grand Cru site on steeper granite and porphyry slopes with a southwest orientation. The soil is very poor and reddish, and retains little moisture. This stress for the vines results in powerful, concentrated grapes with a pronounced mineral profile.
Climate and soil in the Nahe region
The Nahe combines a cool continental climate with high day-night differences. In the Felseneck, the slopes and stony soil ensure heat storage during the day and cooling at night. This produces wines with impressive acidity, refined minerality and natural tension.
Production process of the 2023 Felseneck Riesling GG
Grapes are harvested by hand in small baskets and rigorously selected. After soft pressing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for months on the fine lees without filtration, which provides extra texture, complexity and length. The limited production makes this Grand Cru very exclusive.
Analysis of smell, color and taste of the 2023 edition
In the glass, the 2023 Felseneck Grosses Gewächs has a bright, silvery yellow color. On the nose, it shows hints of lime zest, green apple, wet stone, white flowers and a subtle spice. The scent is intense, tight and refined, with mineral tension. On the palate, the Felseneck is dry and powerful, with a tight acid base and striking minerality. Citrus, stone fruit notes and a subtle smokiness merge. The finish is long, lively and clean, with fine bitters and a light saltiness that keeps the palate fresh.
Drinking advice and storage potential
This wine reaches its optimum harmony between 2026 and 2028, when acidity and fruit are fully intertwined. Thanks to its firm structure and minerality, it develops effortlessly into 2060. When opening young, we recommend opening the bottle well in advance or decanting for a few hours to awaken the aromas.
Why choose this Felseneck Riesling from our range
The 2023 Felseneck Grosses Gewächs is characterized by refined power, pronounced minerality and astonishing length. This wine is a must for serious collectors, sommeliers and gourmets. It belongs to the absolute top of German top Rieslings and deserves a place in every appreciation with aging potential.

Tim Fröhlich's iconic Bockenau Riesling 2023 Felseneck GG shows a clear, bright, delicately aromatic nose of white stone fruits, crushed rocks and salt. Dense, powerful and zesty on the palate yet also aromatic, this is an enormously salty, salivating and stimulating wine with a damn long finish. Great. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.

I love the way the cool, citrusy and ripe stone fruit aromas are intertwined with the smokiness in this sensationally precise and filigreed dry riesling. Enormous flinty energy that extends into every corner of your palate, together with lime and bergamot freshness. Enormously long, pure and salty on the medium-bodied, almost perfectly balanced palate. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink from release.

From: Nahe, Pfalz & Mittelrhein–Of Wheat, Chaff and Thrill (Sep 2024)
The 2023 Riesling Bockenauer Felseneck Grosses Gewächs 2022, from blue Devonian slate, has immediate spice and slate savor, like citrus squeezed on dry stone—fragrant, lifted, soaring. The palate is as fine as a flexible blade, sharp and precise. Nothing here is about power or muscle. Everything is about grace, direction and finesse. If you want definition without weight, this is your wine. The citric dimensions reverberate and zestiness rules. What poise, what elegance. Wow. (Bone-dry)
- By Anne Krebiehl MW on July 2024
Tim Fröhlich is very happy with his 2023 harvest but notes that it was a vintage where you could tell the wheat from the chaff. Initially, it seemed “like a year that would land in your lap. We had rain at the ideal times, and Fröhlich insisted his team stay throughout the summer. They had done the all-important de-leafing in spring within the canopy to create ventilation, but with sufficient moisture, this remained an important task, as did mowing between the rows to prevent rot. This continuous preparatory work helped him and his team with a relatively swift harvest as there was less to sort out as the grapes remained healthy and could be harvested at good ripeness. Fröhlich also credits his steep, stony slopes and their excellent drainage, as well-drained soils are less of a risk factor for rot. Picking started on 16 September and was done within four weeks. The second half of the harvest was “more relaxed” and had better weather than the first. It yielded perfectly healthy grapes “from Gutswein to Auslese.” On the last day of harvest, 15 October, Fröhlich picked Auslese in the Felseneck. The wines received barely any skin contact, and malolactic fermentation was avoided for the white Pinot varieties. He says this was “an early and warm year but with sufficient freshness. Those who invested [in year-round, fine-tuned viticulture] had a great harvest.” The wines present effortless elegance (when, in fact, everything was about effort), and the barrel samples of the GGs I tasted were the final blends—pictures of poise rather than power.

The global demand for Schäfer-Fröhlich wines is constantly increasing, as is the quality. Every new year seems like a new milestone for what Tim Fröhlich is capable of. The wines are exceptionally beautiful, perfectly balanced and have fantastic fruit. The success of Schäfer-Fröhlich is huge. For example, his dry riesling and the spätlese riesling were both named the best in Germany at the 'Königsdisziplinen des deutschen Rieslings' and in the Gault Millau 2013 his spätleses finished in 1st and 4th place.
Tim Fröhlich is called 'the master of spontaneous fermentation', and according to the Gault Millau, the prices of his wines in an international context are 'a joke'. And as Eichelmann says in his eponymous guide: "The wines are getting better and better, have even more precision. Both the dry and the noble sweet Rieslings from Schäfer-Fröhlich are the best in Germany.'
