Description
Didier Dagueneau is a world-famous French winemaker who has left his mark on Pouilly-Fumé. He passed away in 2008, but his son Benjamin, who had been working for his father in the company for years, took over the company with the same passion and talent. Every wine lover knows the magnificent Pouilly-Fumés from Domaine Dagueneau. They are among the best and most sought-after Sauvignon Blanc wines and are on the menu of every serious star restaurant. The Rolls Royce of Pouilly Fumé. We can only obtain a few bottles of this. This is for the simple reason that only a very limited number of bottles are produced and then distributed to all the top wine merchants around the world. The Silex is the most special version.
The Silex is produced only from plots high up on the slopes of Saint Andelain and only from vineyards that have large amounts of silex (clay/slate). The vines here vary from 20-50 years old and are pruned to extremely lower yields than in the other vineyards. The wine is aged in oak barrels (450/600 litres) and of course in Dagueneau's famous cigar-shaped barrels. The Silex is the absolute premier Grand Cru among the Pouilly Fumé
A wonderfully intense bouquet of flowers and resinous herbs rises from the glass of Dagueneau Fume de Pouilly Silex in anticipation of the bittersweet presence of Mediterranean herbs and white flowers with citrus notes. All this ends with an impressive finale. This exceptional pouilly fumé naturally has the unique minerality that makes Dagueneau wine so unique and sought after. The Silex is perhaps the most special and sought after Pouilly Fumé. The Silex is extremely scarce and can be enjoyed even more if you manage to let it rest for a while and then it becomes optimal enjoyment. This is a magnum of 1.5 liters. Even tastier and has an even longer drinking window .

From: Sancerre: Finding Its Place (Aug 2022)
The 2019 Pouilly Fumé Silex shows an initial tenderness, sitting quietly and not shouting that it's made it into your glass. This is a wine that has its act together, feeling integrated and balanced with plentiful concentration and a savory long finish. A delicate dill note, which is a characteristic of oaked Sauvignon peeks out amid the hush.

The life, and now legend, of Didier Dagueneau – motorcycle side-car racing, follow his own path winemaker – put the otherwise unremarkable village of Saint-Andelain on the map. Dagueneau died at age 52 in the ultralight plane he was flying and the wine world mourned his passing. His two children, Louis-Benjamin and Charlotte, took over the domaine but it is the winemaker Jean-Philippe Agisson that youlll generally meet on a visit and tasting while correspondence is generally via Fanny, the office manager. The Dagueneau wines blew the market away when they were first released and they remain a benchmark in Pouilly Fumé but the gap between Dagueneau and the rest of the field is not the gulf it was when he burst on the scene although the price tag would suggest otherwise. Dagueneau’s inspiration for Silex, his most famous cuvée was Marcel Guitton, the original single vineyard Sancerre producer, who first put silex (flint) on the wine label. Today, it is the most important wine in the range in terms of volume produced. These are wines made within the boundaries of the Pouilly Fumé appellation but they have been labelled as Vin de France since the 2017 vintage following the appellation tasting panel’s rejection of a wine. Its taut, precise and mineral Monts Damnés cuvée remains under the Sancerre appellation. The wines are all made in the same way in a bid to highlight the different sites whether it’s the one-third marl and two-thirds flint component of the ‘entry’ wine Blanc Etc., the richer clays of Buisson Renard, which gives the wine rounded shoulders and perhaps less precision compared with the flintier soils. The Pur Sang cuvée hails from the village of Saint Laurent l'Abbaye, about 5km northeast of the domaine, and is perhaps the most distinctive cuvées when tasting a full Dagueaeau flight. The parcel has a chalky bedrock overlaid by flint pebbles, making for a well-draining soil and producing real finesse, clarity and tension. All the wines see around 20-25% new oak and typically spend 8-10 months on lees. With a new warehouse being built in 2022, the plan is to hold the wines in bottle for longer before releasing them on to the market. The wines are neither fined nor filtered.

Domaine Didier Dagueneau is located in Saint-Andelain which falls under the Pouilly-Fumé (dry white wine type with AOC classification). The area is characterized by the mainly flint clay soil, partly responsible for the characteristic taste of the wines from this area.
Since the death of the eponymous owner Didier Dagueneau in 2008, the winery has been run by Benjamin Dagueneau. His father Didier was known in the wine world for his great wines. His son Benjamin is at least as talented and continues to work passionately in the way his father did. Of course you can taste that in the fantastic wines that this winery produces. The real wine lovers certainly know the beautiful Pouilly-Fumés of Domaine Dagueneau. They are among the most sought after and the best Sauvignon Blanc wines and are on the menu of renowned restaurants.
