Winery Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti ranks among the absolute top of the Côte de Nuits and works exclusively with its own vineyards. The approach is uncompromising, focused on purity, balance, and exceptional longevity. Hand selection, low yields, and meticulous vinification form the foundation. La Tâche is a monopoly of the estate and is known for its combination of structure, intensity, and aromatic complexity, with bottle aging being an essential element in the final expression.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
La Tâche is located in Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits, on the classic Burgundian slopes where limestone and clay create tension and depth. Its location among other top crus in Vosne-Romanée enhances the cool, precise profile typical of great Pinot Noir. The 2019 vintage produced ripe, healthy grapes with abundant aromatic intensity, while the balance of acidity and structure clearly guides the wine toward long aging.
La Tâche Monopole is one of the estate's most iconic wines. Within the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti style, La Tâche is known as a more structured, broadly based expression, with considerable reserve in its youth and a development that can extend over decades.
Vineyards and grape varieties
100% Pinot Noir from the monopoly vineyard La Tâche in Vosne-Romanée. Harvested between September 16th and 18th, 2019, yielded approximately 23 hl/ha. Production remained very limited, at approximately 994 cases, further underscoring the scarcity of this vintage.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously selected. Vinification focuses on a clear interpretation of the origin and vintage, with an emphasis on precision and structure. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, with the use of wood continuing to enhance the fruit, texture, and aromatic layering. In recent years, minor cellar refinements have been made, including changes in barreling and a slightly earlier bottling date than before, with the aim of retaining additional detail and tension.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep ruby red color with a concentrated core. The aroma immediately reveals a wealth of detail: wild berries and dark red fruit, rose petals and violets, followed by bergamot and distinct spices like cinnamon and cloves. With aeration, the profile deepens towards potpourri, subtle spiciness, and a more earthy undertone that adds depth to the wine. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate calls the wine sublime, noting its breadth and layering, while Antonio Galloni of Vinous emphasizes that the characteristic La Tâche aromas are woven into the fruit.
On the palate, La Tâche 2019 is full and deep, with a multidimensional structure. The structure is pronounced yet refined, with fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity that carry the intensity. The wine feels powerful and broad, yet remains precise and energetic. Neal Martin of Vinous describes the wine as very pure and defined, with a spicy precision that lingers on the palate. The finish is long and resonant, with layers of fruit, floral notes, and spices.
Development and drinking window
Several drinking windows are mentioned for this wine. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate (99+ points) suggests a development period of 2033 to 2070. Antonio Galloni of Vinous (98 points) places the window from around 2029 to 2069, while Neal Martin of Vinous (98 points) takes a broader approach, starting around 2025 and looking through to 2065. The common denominator is clear: this is a wine with plenty of reserve that richly rewards bottle aging.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate rates La Tâche 2019 99+ points, highlighting its depth, concentration, and exceptional balance, with a finish that demands bottle aging. Antonio Galloni of Vinous (98 points) highlights the intensity and classic La Tâche signature, firmly anchored in the fruit. Neal Martin of Vinous (98 points) emphasizes the precision, purity, and long, sustained evolution in bottle.

The 2019 La Tâche Grand Cru is sublime. Mingling aromas of wild berries and bergamot with notions of rose petals, exotic spices, violets, clove and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a multidimensional palate of breathtaking plenitude. Elegantly muscular, this is a vibrant, pristinely balanced wine that concludes with a long, resonant finish. More structured and broader shouldered than the ethereal Romanée-Conti itself, this will demand and richly reward bottle age.
This was a particularly memorable tasting at the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Revisiting the bottled 2019s was thrilling, as these are some of the most sensual, dramatic young wines I've ever tasted at this address; and the young 2020s, tasted from barrel (with the exception of several cuvées that had been recently racked), show immense potential too.
A few small evolutions have been made in the cellars in the last few years, with Tonnellerie La Grange increasingly in evidence alongside historically dominant François Frères on the red side of the ledger, and barrels from Séguin Morey, Damy and Taransaud to be found in the new room devoted to the domaine's white wines. Bottling is also a touch earlier than in the past.

From: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: The 2019s (Jun 2022)
Blood orange, star anise, cinnamon and dark red toned fruit, all waft from the glass in the 2019 La Tâche Grand Cru. There’s plenty of the trademark La Tâche aromatics, but it’s almost as if they are wrapped inside the fruit rather than around it. Here, too, the overall impression is of a Burgundy of power and tremendous overall intensity. Even though the 2019 is so alluring today, I wouldn’t think of opening a bottle anytime soon. The 2019 is a total stunner.

From: Better Than Water: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2019 in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 La Tâche Grand Cru was picked over three days from 16 to 18 of September at 23hL/ha. Like the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, this wine gives you no choice but to sit and contemplate. The bouquet is beautifully-defined, broody and introspective at first, less immediate than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, then after 10 minutes it becomes highly perfumed with potpourri and rose petals, dark berry fruit, perhaps just a hint of liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied, extraordinarily well-defined and pure. There is a touch more spice compared to recent vintages, a pinch of white pepper lingers on the tongue for a minute after the wine has exited. There is real structure to this La Tâche and my intuition is that this will close for a period during its long arching evolution in bottle. 994 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in bottle tasting in London.- By Neal Martin on February 2022

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (abbreviated DRC) is one of the most legendary wine estates in the world and is considered the pinnacle of Burgundian winemaking. The estate has a rich history that goes back hundreds of years and a deep connection with the traditions and terroirs of Burgundy.
Historical background of Romanée-Conti:
Early origins: The vineyards of Romanée-Conti have been cultivated since the Middle Ages. They were originally owned by monastic orders, who at that time managed many vineyards in Burgundy.
18th century: The Romanée vineyard (now Romanée-Conti) came into the hands of the Prince of Conti, Louis François de Bourbon, a nephew of Louis XV, in 1760. He added his name to the vineyard, which then became "La Romanée-Conti." The prince used the wine exclusively for his own court and guests, which contributed to its exclusive reputation.
French Revolution: During the French Revolution, the properties of the nobility, including Romanée-Conti, were confiscated. It was sold as national property.
Modern history: In 1869 the estate was purchased by the de Villaine family. Together with the Leroy family, they remain owners of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to this day.
Domaine Romanée-Conti and its vineyards and terroirs:
Locations: DRC manages some of the most prestigious grand cru vineyards in Burgundy, including: Romanée-Conti (monopole)
- La Tâche (monopole)
- Richebourg
- Romanée-Saint-Vivant
- Grands Échézeaux
- Échézeaux
- Corton (since 2009)
- Montrachet (for the white wine)
Terroir:
The vineyards are located in Vosne-Romanée and feature a unique combination of limestone-rich soils, a mild climate, and an ideal location, resulting in wines of exceptional finesse and complexity.
Philosophy and viticulture of DRC
Hand harvest: Every grape is picked by hand to ensure quality.
Biodynamic viticulture: Since the 1980s, DRC has introduced biodynamic methods to preserve the natural balance of the vineyards.
Vinification: DRC combines traditional Burgundian techniques with modern innovations. The wines are aged in new oak barrels and mature for a long time before being released.
Why are the wines of Domaine Romanée-Conti so exclusive?
- Limited production: The total annual production of DRC is extremely low, making the wines rare and highly sought after.
- Quality over quantity: Every detail in production, from vineyard to bottle, is executed with the greatest care.
- Influence: DRC is the benchmark against which other Burgundian and even international wines are measured. The name is synonymous with luxury and perfection.
- Desirability: DRC wines are sold at auctions for record prices and are a must-have for collectors.
- Cultural icon: Over the centuries, DRC has become a symbol of elegance and refinement in the world of wine.
