Description
Andremily wines
Andremily Wines was founded by winemaker Jim Binns, the Krankl family's right-hand man for many years at the renowned Sine Qua Non. His experience with small parcels, slow vinification, and bold blends formed the foundation for his own project. From the outset, the emphasis has been on small productions, individual parcels, and a style that combines ripe fruit and tension.
The estate operates vineyards in Edna Valley and Santa Barbara County. These regions are known for their cool ocean influences and large temperature variations between day and night. These conditions keep the grapes fresh and aromatic. The soils vary from calcareous sandstone to loam, resulting in wines with depth and structure. Andremily produces only a few cuvées annually, including Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah-based wines that have received international acclaim.
The terroir and climate of Edna Valley and Santa Barbara County
The 2019 Andremily Grenache comes from sources including Slide Hill Vineyard in Edna Valley and three parcels in Santa Barbara County: Alta Mesa, Larner, and Harrison Clarke. This part of California is known for its rare east-west oriented valleys, which allow cool ocean air to flow deep inland. The result is a long growing season with high aromatic concentration and retention of natural acidity.
Edna Valley is one of California's coolest AVAs and is known for its rich volcanic and chalky soils. In Santa Barbara County, sandstone, loam, and limestone create structure and tension. The combination of altitude, ocean breezes, and rich soils gives Grenache a refined, expressive style that develops beautifully in the bottle.
The grape varieties and blend of the 2019 Andremily Grenache
The 2019 Andremily Grenache isn't just a pure expression of Grenache. It's a carefully crafted blend that adds extra layers. The composition consists of Grenache, supplemented with 11 percent Mourvèdre, 6 percent Syrah, and 4 percent Graciano. Each grape plays a distinct role. Mourvèdre brings body and dark aromas. Syrah adds tension and color. Graciano provides freshness and an extra aromatic lift. Together, these grapes give the wine a rich and vibrant character that remains both powerful and refined.
Harvest, fermentation and maturation of the 2019 Andremily Grenache
In 2019, 65 percent whole bunches were used. This increases the complexity and gives the wine fine, spicy nuances. Vinification is slow and precise, with attention to extraction without sacrificing elegance.
Maturation lasted approximately 21 months. The wine was aged 50 percent in new French barriques and 600-liter demi-muids, and 50 percent in used barriques. This gives structure and depth without dominating the fruit. The wine was bottled on August 21, 2021, and has longevity potential. The balance of ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and subtle oak notes makes the style energetic and precise.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2019 Andremily Grenache
The color is deep ruby red with a vibrant, youthful sparkle. The aroma reveals savory notes of tar and forest floor, followed by dried flowers, cinnamon, prosciutto, and black cherries. This combination of sultry fruit and earthy layers is characteristic of Andremily's style.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with plenty of tension and bright fruit. The acidity provides energy and length. The tannins are fine and grainy, providing structure without harshness. The finish is long, spicy, and leaves room for further development in the coming years. The aromatic character and layered structure make this a wine that will impress both now and in the future.

The 2019 Grenache is blended with 11% Mourvèdre, 6% Syrah and 4% Graciano and was made using 65% whole clusters. Fruit comes from the Slide Hill Vineyard in Edna Valley, and the Alta Mesa Vineyard, Larner Vineyard and Harrison-Clarke Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. It was matured for about 21 months in 50% new French barriques and 600-liter demi-muids and 50% used French barriques. Deep ruby in color, it opens with savory tones of tar and loamy earth that give way to potpourri, cinnamon stick, prosciutto and black cherries. The medium-bodied palate is bright and juicy with fragrant fruits, fine, grainy tannins and bright acidity, and it has a very long, latent, spicy finish hinting at further improvement in bottle. Bottled on August 21, 2021, and tasted May 25, 2022, it will be released to consumers in the summer of 2022. 395 cases and a few magnums are available; it will be packaged and sold as a three-bottle set ($330), while magnums will be offered as a box set with the 2019 Andremily EABA.

The 2019 Grenache marries textural richness with energy. It's a big wine, like all these wines are, but there is good vibrancy to the flavors. Sage, rose petal, mint and chocolate.- By Antonio Galloni on June 2022
Jim Binns continues to expand in impressive fashion. Readers will note the introduction of a new white. As always, the wines are done in a rich, unctuous style, with extended maceration and tons of depth. With the right sites, that style can be incredibly exciting.
