Description
Background of Neyers Vineyards and the Napa Region
Neyers Vineyards was founded in 1992 by Bruce and Barbara Neyers. Located in the Napa Valley, the winery combines French tradition with Californian expression. Bruce Neyers worked for many years with Kermit Lynch, the well-known importer of French terroir wines, which is clearly reflected in the style and philosophy of the estate. Neyers produces Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and a number of blends with Rhône grapes such as Sage Canyon. The grapes are sourced from cooler parts of Northern California, including Contra Costa County and the Sierra Foothills.
Wine Region, Climate and Grape Selection for Sage Canyon
The grapes for Sage Canyon wine come from select vineyards in cooler parts of California where old vines are planted in sandy or gravelly soils. The grapes benefit from warm days and cool nights, which produces ripe fruit and lively acidity. The blend is inspired by the Southern Rhône and reflects the varietals that are traditionally found there, but with a Californian intensity and purity.
Composition, harvest and vinification of Neyers Sage Canyon
The Sage Canyon is a red blend of Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and without the addition of enzymes or additives. The wine is aged in neutral French oak, which contributes texture without the wood dominating the wine. This minimal intervention emphasizes purity and balance. No clarification or filtration takes place before bottling.
Color, smell and taste of Neyers Sage Canyon
The wine shows itself in the glass with a ruby red color. In the nose aromas of cranberry, black cherry and pomegranate emerge, alternating with hints of white pepper, anise and earthy spices. In the mouth the Sage Canyon is lively and layered: bright fruit is carried by fine acidity and silky tannins. Spicy and floral accents remain present in the aftertaste. The wine offers intensity without becoming heavy, and has a remarkably fresh structure.
International appreciation for Neyers Sage Canyon
The 2018 vintage received 91 points from Wine Spectator, describing it as “vibrant and distinctive, with snappy cranberry and cherry flavors, laced with smoky anise and white pepper notes.” IntoWine also awarded the wine 92 points, praising it for its expression of Rhône grapes.
