The 2018 Riserva Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is an extraordinary wine, hand-picked from the serene heights of Poggio Antico, located in the picturesque region of Montalcino, Tuscany. This vintage embodies the essence of an exceptional vintage, in which the cold winters and distinctive climatic conditions have contributed to the creation of a wine of unparalleled complexity and refinement.

Terroir and Vineyard: The vineyard, situated on a plateau 500 meters above sea level with a southern exposure, is rich in gravel and stones. These characteristics provide excellent drainage and play a crucial role in developing the complex aromas and structures in the wine. The average yield of approximately 40 quintals per hectare reflects strict vineyard management and a commitment to quality over quantity.

Vinification: The vinification process begins with a three-day cold maceration in concrete tulip-shaped tanks, followed by a two-week fermentation period and an additional 15-day maceration. This process ensures the gentle extraction of color and phenolics, which are essential for the development of the wine's deep character.

Maturation: After fermentation, the wine matures for 30 months in 25 hectoliter French oak barrels, giving the wine its characteristic complexity and structure. The wine is then aged in the bottle for another 30 months, resulting in a beautiful harmony between fruit, tannins, and oak influences.

Harvest and Production: The harvest, carried out on October 4, followed one of the coldest winters in recent decades, with several snowfall periods. The 2018 vintage was characterized by an exceptionally cool and windy climate, with temperatures below average even in summer. These conditions extended ripening until the end of September, allowing the grapes to benefit from significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. The harvested Sangiovese grapes were perfectly fragrant, with a well-balanced phenolic concentration, indicating a solid foundation for phenomenal aging.

Viticulture: Poggio Antico adopts a 100% certified organic approach, using natural fertilizers to ensure the vitality of the soil. The management of vegetation, including the use of tonics to strengthen the plants' natural defenses, highlights the commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly wine production.

The Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino and the Riserva are distributed through the Place du Bordeaux - so always around September of the year, the negociances in Bordeaux distribute the always scarce wines worldwide among the only affiliated wine distributors, including Grandcru wines. Poggio Antico is one of the highest estates in Tuscany. In 1984 it was bought by Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder and in 2017 by a Belgian company.

Poggio Antico is a certified organic winery starting with the 2020 vintage. Over the past year, the winery has been modified to include more cement and steel vats in the fermentation area. The aim is to pursue smaller batch vinifications from specific vineyards. Poggio Antico has also planted two new hectares of vines in the prized I Poggi area and plans to add more new vines in 2021. There is also a replanting in the vineyard making the IGT Toscana Madre (a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon) - the replanting will last until 2026.
