The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna i Poggi is a stunning example of craftsmanship and dedication to quality, produced by the renowned Poggio Antico, located in the breathtaking hills of Montalcino, Tuscany. This exceptional single vineyard wine reflects the unique terroir of the "I Poggi" vineyard, a 2.5 hectare plot of land with a complex soil composition that provides ideal conditions for the cultivation of Sangiovese grapes.

Terroir and Vineyard: The "I Poggi" vineyard, planted in 2005, is distinguished by its altitude of 550 to 570 meters above sea level and its south-west exposure. The soil consists of five different units, rich in limestone and nutrients, which ensures excellent drainage. The unique Tuscan Galestro soil, with more than 35% gravel, provides the perfect mix of rocky, deep and moderately fertile soil for the vines.

Vinification: The grapes from Vigna I Poggi undergo careful, separate vinification in tulip-shaped concrete tanks of 60hl. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place simultaneously with maceration at temperatures below 25°C, resulting in a gentle extraction of phenolic compounds. This careful process is followed by a gentle pressing to separate the "flower wine" from the "press wine", after which the wine is aged for 30 months in 25 hl Austrian oak barrels, followed by a further 6 months of aging in concrete before bottling.

Harvest and Production: The harvest, which took place on October 4, 7 and 22, was preceded by a cold winter and spring season, which resulted in a slow emergence. However, the abundant rainfall during the growing season ensured a perfect balance, essential for the accumulation of a large amount of polyphenols and optimal ripeness. The strong temperature fluctuations in September and October enhanced the phenolic component of the vineyard, contributing to the complexity and intensity of the wine.

Viticulture: Completely organic, with an approach that guarantees the vitality of the soil through the use of natural fertilizers and the management of green cover to strengthen the plants' natural defenses. These methods, together with selective green manuring, emphasize the symbiotic relationship with the ecosystem.

With a production of 7,500 bottles, 1,200 magnums and 120 double magnums, the Brunello di Montalcino Vigna i Poggi is an expression of Poggio Antico's passion and dedication to creating wines that capture the essence of their unique terroir. An epitome of depth, complexity and elegance, this wine represents the authentic sound of Poggio Antico's expression of terroir.

The Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino and the Riserva are distributed through the Place du Bordeaux - so always around September of the year, the negociances in Bordeaux distribute the always scarce wines worldwide among the only affiliated wine distributors, including Grandcru wines. Poggio Antico is one of the highest estates in Tuscany. In 1984 it was bought by Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder and in 2017 by a Belgian company.

Poggio Antico is a certified organic winery starting with the 2020 vintage. Over the past year, the winery has been modified to include more cement and steel vats in the fermentation area. The aim is to pursue smaller batch vinifications from specific vineyards. Poggio Antico has also planted two new hectares of vines in the prized I Poggi area and plans to add more new vines in 2021. There is also a replanting in the vineyard making the IGT Toscana Madre (a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon) - the replanting will last until 2026.
