The Barolo DOCG Perno is a red wine, produced with Nebbiolo grapes from the DOCG area (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) of Barolo. The perfect exposure of the vineyard, together with the specific characteristics of climate and soil, leads to an extremely elegant and long-lived wine. The vineyard is located in the most beautiful part of the Barolo DOCG, namely in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba. The wine is named after the name of the vineyard Perno. The vineyard is located high at 395 meters above sea level with a southern exposure. The soil consists of fossil marl of S. Agata - gray-blue marl (more or less sandy) and is very calcareous. The vineyard is only a few hectares and was planted in 1980. The perfect exposure of the vineyard, together with the specific characteristics of climate and soil, results in an extremely elegant and long-lived wine and this Perno is without a doubt the flagship Barolo of Montaribaldi. The wine is extremely scarce and even we as Importer can only get a handful of cases.

The Nebbiolo is a late ripening grape variety and the grapes for this great Barolo are harvested in the first half of October. Once in the winery the grapes are destemmed and crushed and then placed in stainless steel thermo-conditioned tanks where the alcoholic fermentation takes place. The alcoholic fermentation lasts for a good 10 days at a temperature of 28-30 ° C. The wine then remains in contact with its lees for at least two months while the lactic acid fermentation completes. The wine is now ready and must now mature in peace. This is done in oak barriques where approximately 60% is in new oak and 40% in 1-year-old oak barrels for 36 months. Montaribaldi's vision is that oak refines the wine as long as it is not excessive. The Barolo Sàrz is then bottled but then remains in the cellars of Montaribaldi for at least another 6 months. Montaribaldi is a specialist in terroir wines, not a chemistry factory, because good wine must come from a good vineyard and a vintage must reflect the terroir, is Luciano's opinion and we fully support this.

In the glass this Barolo Perno has the typical light red color with orange reflections on the edge of the glass. In the nose beautiful tones of wood, leather, espresso, a bit of forest floor, ripe fruit and spices. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied with fresh acids, refined beautiful tannins that are not bitter but are very well integrated and a good indication of the long life that this Barolo Perno will have. Our advice is to carafe the wine or open it at least 2 hours in advance. This is a wine that needs at least 6 years to develop further. The great success of this winery comes from tradition and innovation and because of this they are able to produce beautiful wines of a very high quality every year. The wine perfect with roasted meat, savory cheese and of course dishes with truffle. This is a wine with a great aging potential.

BAROLO VS BARBERESCO

Piedmont - synonymous with truffles, risotto and, of course, delicious wines! - is considered one of Italy's premier wine regions. The local conditions of terrain, soil and weather produce some fantastic wines. As for the reds, the Barolos and Barbarescos are world-famous, powerful, ageing wines. Despite Barolo and Barbaresco being made from the same grape, Nebbiolo, and produced in neighbouring regions within 10 miles of each other, the wines of Barbaresco and Barolo have some distinctive differences.

The Barbaresco area is located south of the Tanaro river and due to its location the area has a slightly higher average temperature which allows the Nebbiolo grape to ripen slightly earlier than in the Barolo area. Young tannins in a young Barbaresco are often not as hard as Barolo and under DOCG rules it is permitted to release Barbaresco for sale a year earlier than Barolo. The most pronounced difference between the two wines is that the tannins of Barbaresco tend to soften more quickly making the wine more approachable at a younger age than Barolo. The Barbaresco area is smaller than the Barolo area with an annual production of around 35% of Barolo production which means that Barbaresco is not as widely available on the market.

The 'azienda agricola Montaribaldi' is historically a family business, located in the middle of the Langhe hills in the small village of Barbaresco. The Montaribaldi winery has been owned by the Taliano family from the beginning and has 19 hectares in the Barberesco area. In 1994 Luciano and Roberto took over the company from their father and immediately decided to only produce high quality wines. It is still a real family business, father Guiseppe and mother Carla as well as the wives of the owners, Antonella and Franca all cooperate. At present they produce about 75000 bottles a year. Thanks to the perfect location of the vineyards of Montaribaldi and the typical white soil of the hills in Langhe, the elegant wines that come from them have a long life. Note that the land around the Montaribaldi vineyards is from Gaja. The family makes some of the most famous wines from the Piedmont region: Barbaresco DOCG, Barolo DOCG, Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Roero Arneis. They offer a complete range of wines, from grapes typical of this region. Typical of this winery is that the wines have their origin in Piedmont, are always recognizable as a 'Montaribaldi' wine and are sustainably grown and produced. As they call it themselves: making 'vineyard wines' distinguishes them from others.
