Description
Château la Négly is located in the Languedoc, on the banks of the Étang de Pissévache on the foothills of the La Clape Massif. Négly is owned by the Paux-Rosset family, and daughter Marion makes the wine, assisted by oenologist Claude Gros. The great diversity of soils, height difference and location (up to ten meters from the tide's edge!) ensures a great variety in style and strength, but there is one characteristic that unites all wines: great precision and a strong degree of minerality. The quality of Négly has not gone unnoticed by Parker: he has repeatedly given high ratings (up to 99 points) to various Négly wines!
The La Négly La Clape L'Ancely 2018 is a wonderful example of the potential of Mourvèdre in the La Clape appellation. It gives a completely different expression than, for example, Bandol - more seductive and tender. On the nose, raspberries and cherries are abundant, but there are also subtle herbal and salty elements that give the wine a savory edge. It is medium to full-bodied, rich in texture and soft. With a few years of aging, this becomes even more beautiful and given the resistance of Mourvèdre to oxidation, it can have a long lifespan. 96/100 Parker.

The 2017 La Clape L'Ancely is a stunning example of Mourvèdre's potential in the La Clape appellation. It's a very different expression from, say, Bandol, but more seductive and tender in the hands of this estate. Raspberries and cherries abound, and while there's a hint of the variety's so-called tree-bark character, there's also subtle spice and brine elements that give the wine a savory edge. It's medium to full-bodied, richly textural and plush, accessible now but sure to age well for at least 5-6 years—and possibly considerably longer, given Mourvèdre's resistance to oxidation. This is fast becoming my personal favorite of the Negly lineup.
This estate in the La Clape appellation has made a huge reputation as one of the top red wine producers in the Languedoc, crafting massive yet balanced and even somewhat elegant wines from the region's classic grape varieties. The Paux-Rosset family, with help from consultant Claude Gros, consistently makes terrific wine, with the big mystery being how so many of the descriptors can add up to something that sounds like dessert, yet the wines come across as savory and easy to drink. If I knew how they were able to do it, I'd start my own consulting business. Instead, I'm just left to enjoy and marvel at their results. Don't overlook the affiliated properties, listed separately: Clos des Truffiers, Château la Vernède (including a 2019 red made without added sulfites), and Domaine de Boède.

More raspberry and cherry-fruited than most of the offerings here, the charming 2018 La Clape L'Ancely is mainly Mourvèdre, normally with around one-fifth Grenache or less. Like the 2017 did, the 2018 is aging in 600-liter demi-muids. Plush and creamy textured, this full-bodied wine is attractive already, finishing with notes of peppery spice and lingering, silky tannins. It's sure to be another in a long string of hits for this benchmark estate.
