Description
Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi makes delicious wines in Alicante in addition to its Riojas. In Alicante, wine growing flourished under the Phoenicians, long before our era. Here it is the monastrell grape that rules the day. The flagship of the Alicante wine region is undoubtedly this El Sequé. None other than Juan Carlos López de Lacalle (owner/winemaker of bodegas Artadi in Rioja) is the maker of this El Sequé. This is a wine made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre. The vines of this wine were planted in 1945. After a very careful selection of vineyards, the monastrell grapes from the oldest plots are used to produce this great wine with an authentic Mediterranean character. Maturation of 12 months in French oak barriques, medium toast, partly new, partly 1 to 2 years old.
The colour of the El Sequé is inviting, dark garnet red. Rich aromas of ripe, candied black fruits and mint come towards you from the glass. Deliciously full of flavour and yet fresh, with ripe tannins and a velvety, fresh and spicy finish in which licorice, wild mint and fennel give the wine a true Mediterranean character. Complex in flavour with a very long finish The El Seque is a beautiful wine with an extremely good price-quality!

The 2021 El Sequé was produced with ripe Monastrell grapes that achieved 14.7% alcohol from organically farmed vineyards at 600 meters in altitude in Alicante on sandy and clay soils. The wine matured in 500-liter French oak barrels for six months, down from 12 months in the past. They are very happy with the result of the 2021 vintage; the wine is very ripe but has lots of freshness. It's serious and fruit-driven, with ripeness but without hints of over-ripeness. 60,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2022.
I tasted the wines from El Sequé as part of the Artadi portfolio in 2023 and now tasted the 2022. I publish here all the notes for context and completeness of the Mediterranean article. They have purchased new vineyards and are doing some separate vinifications in the excellent 2023 vintage with the idea of maybe releasing some single vineyard or new wines in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Bombastic fruit with a heap of ripe red plums, red cherries, fresh figs and hibiscus. Lots of fruit on the palate with a very juicy middle and round tannins. Sappy and pretty long. Drink now.

In the medieval village of Laguardia, the future of La Rioja has developed in the cellars of Artadi. Without a doubt, this masterpiece is thanks to the brilliant and creative work of Juan Carlos López, who is assisted today by his son Carlos.
When Juan Carlos made the cooperative into an independent 'bodega' in 1992, he had been in charge of it for 7 years. His vision was revolutionary and completely flattened Rioja, but in no time he managed to make the best of wines from Spain, which immediately conquered the whole world. The short cuts in the vineyards with very small yields as a result, and the use of French oak barrels were just some of his innovative ideas. Even more important was the early bottling of his wines, in contrast to the traditional riojas, which were sometimes stored on large wooden 'foudres' for up to 10 years. With this he also deliberately stepped aside from the Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva classification.
All wines in their range are made exclusively from the Tempranillo grape which has its birthplace in Rioja and can also give the best quality here. The range covers 3 wines in which Viñas de Gain forms their base wine. This wine is the great example of the best Rioja wines and is often used as a reference point. Without a doubt the best quality wine for its price !!
For Pagos Viejos , only the best grapes from the old vineyards are selected, which come from the best terroirs from all over Rioja. It is therefore no wonder that this wine is a true explosion of fruit, structure and elegant tannins. This wine owes the perfect balance to the 14-month oak barrel aging. A superior Grandes Añadas is only made from this selection in the very largest years.
Viña el Pison comes from a unique piece of land of 2.4 hectares where the subsoil and the location of the vineyard to the sun are exceptional tenors. With an average age of 65, the vines give nothing but the very best, but unfortunately also very limited, making this whopper so unique!
