Description
The Yllera family has a long history of winemaking in Spain's Ribera del Duero, but their new project VivaltuS is already their 2016 crowning achievement as their very first vintage. A wine that will be an important name in Ribera del Duero' in the eyes of Wine Advocate's Luis Gutiérrez. The stormy success of the Vivaltus can partly be attributed to the legendary advisor Jean-Claude Berrouet, winemaker at Château Pétrus and Dominus. Tim Atkin MW praises Berrouet's influence, stating that even considering his 'distinguished track record', this is truly 'a remarkable wine'. It is also special that this wine is distributed via the Place du Bordeaux to ensure that only serious and renowned wine companies handle this wine with care and of course Grandcruwijnen is one of these companies that can purchase directly and directly.
The 2017 vintage is only the second vintage on the market. LThe Vivaltus is the top model and the Fleur de Vivaltus is the second wine from Vivaltus. Vivaltus and La Fleur de Vivaltus are both made from 96% Tempranillo (supplemented with 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot) and are therefore Spanish in principle. However, Berrouet's influence is very noticeable: the wines feel distinctly French/Bordeaux in their elegance, freshness and classic style. The wines come from very old vineyards at 800-1,000 meters. The Vivaltus has a substantial filling. On the one hand Bordeaux influences, but very Spanish and real Tempranillo character at the core. Made for drinkability and digestibility. Cherries, tobacco, earth, vanilla. Good storage potential. Traditionally made, yet with modern influences: a new interpretation of Ribera del Duero. Silky soft molten tannins and evolving texture followed by a long, tasty finish.
"Vivaltus will soon be an important name in Ribera del Duero.” Wine Advocate, Louis Gutierrez
“What a debut! Even given the distinguished track record of consultant Jean Claude Berrouet, this is a remarkable wine.” 97 Tim Atkins

I was very pleasantly surprised by the bottled 2017 Vivaltus despite the fact that 2017 was a challenging year and was decimated by terrible frost in April that resulted in losses of up to 60% of the crop. The end of the season was warm and the harvest early, so the growing cycle was quite short. The wine is floral, perfumed, elegant and insinuating; the oak feels pretty integrated, and the palate is balanced with very good tannins (not as refined as those form the 2016 or 2018). A triumph over the adverse conditions of the vintage.
Vivaltus is the high-end project from the Yllera family with the help of Jean-Claude Berrouet and first-class Ribera del Duero grapes.

The eponymous 2016 Vivaltus was really impressive. I was already amazed at the unbottled sample, and the finished wine seems even better! It's a blend of Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, mostly from old vines. It fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and aged for around 12 months in French barriques, 20% of them new. But there's no oak in the nose, which is ethereal and perfumed, elegant and nuanced, with notes of violets, wild berries and herbs. The palate shows ultra-refined tannins and comes through as beautifully textured, with a fine, chalky minerality, very good precision, clean and focused flavors and a long, tasty finish. This is really amazing. 16,000 bottles were filled in July 2018. Prices had not yet been set, but when I first tasted it some 16 months ago, they were talking about something around $150...
Vivaltus is the new project in Ribera del Duero from the Yllera family. They purchase top-quality grapes from old vines and ferment and age the wines with the advice of Bordeaux guru Jean-Claude Berrouet. I have not yet seen any of the Vivaltus wines in the market. I tasted the bottled 2016s, but the bottles didn't have labels. I don't know when this will be released, and I already wrote about them (and was impressed) some 16 months ago. Vivaltus will soon be an important name in Ribera del Duero.

The owner is the Yllera family who have been making quality wines for 6 generations. Currently the company is run by a team of professional young people led by the brothers and sisters Marcos and Carlos Yllera and we have taken Yllera Bodegas Y Viñedos to the top in the wine sector. They are always looking for the best quality-price-personality relationship in their wines and thanks to the continuous investments and expansions in the wineries and vineyards, the barrels and technology. The family's latest project, VivaltuS, is the prestigious project of Spanish winemaker Montxo Martinez and legendary French winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet (the man behind Château Petrus and Dominus).
