Description
The Yllera family has a long history of winemaking in Spain's Ribera del Duero, but their new project VivaltuS is already their 2016 crowning achievement as their very first vintage. A wine that will be an important name in Ribera del Duero' in the eyes of Wine Advocate's Luis Gutiérrez. The stormy success of the Vivaltus 2016 can partly be attributed to the legendary advisor Jean-Claude Berrouet, winemaker at Château Pétrus and Dominus. Tim Atkin MW praises Berrouet's influence, stating that even considering his 'distinguished track record', this is truly 'a remarkable wine'.
It is also special that this wine is distributed via the Place du Bordeaux to ensure that only serious and renowned wine companies handle this wine with care and of course Grandcruwijnen is one of these companies that can purchase directly and directly.
Somewhat in line with the Bordeaux principles (the influence of Jean-Claude Berrouet), there is also a second wine: the Fleur Vivaltus. This is mainly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and is made like the big brother but from younger vines that will eventually go into Vivaltus. It fermented with its own yeasts, followed by an élevage lasting 12 months in 70% used barrels, 20% new and 10% in concrete eggs. The fleur Vivaltis has a very good freshness and elegance. The wine is slightly floral, perfumed and elegant, with a lively palate with very good freshness. We can certainly say here that the Ribera del Duero has a clear burgundy style.
Luis Gutiérrez from the Wine Advocate is very impressed and writes: " Vivaltus is a new ambitious project from Grupo Yllera, with the advice of famous French winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet of Petrus fame, to produce top-quality wines in Ribera del Duero There are a lot of expectations around the project, which already works in Rueda, Toro and Ribera del Duero. I tasted the first two vintages, 2016 and 2017, both still unbottled, with Berrouet in Madrid. In a true Bordeaux style, they produce two wines, Petit Vivaltus (still a tentative name) and Vivaltus, produced in the same way and decided at blending time. Berrouet thinks grand vin has to be fine, elegant and nuanced. He described the second wine as more structured and the eponymous more ethereal, and the wine has to deliver pleasure and be consumed at the table, at least that's how he understands great wine"

2018 La Fleur Vivaltus
RP 92+
Drink Date: 2023 - 2029
The 2018 La Fleur Vivaltus has some similarities with the 2016, but the 2016 is now more expressive and open and the 2018 still feels young, a bit shy and undeveloped. It has very good freshness and elegance and is floral and perfumed, but it should develop more perfume with more time in bottle. It's medium to full-bodied, and the tannins are fine-grained. It's developing nicely.
I had already tasted the Vivaltus wines from 2016 to 2018 way before they were released. The 2018s are going to be sold through La Place de Bordeaux in September 2023, so I retasted them now. I also had a preview of future vintages, as the wines are released five years after the harvest but are bottled with an élevage of two years.
Vivaltus is the high-end project from the Yllera family with the help of Jean-Claude Berrouet and first-class Ribera del Duero grapes.

I tasted the bottled version of the 2016 La Fleur de Vivaltus (formerly Petit Vivaltus), which showed pretty much like the sample I tasted with Jean-Claude Berrouet and his son Jeff in Madrid on a warm summer Monday morning in 2018. It's mostly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and has 13.9% alcohol. It fermented with neutral yeasts followed by an élevage that lasted 12 months in 70% used barrels, 20% new ones and 10% in concrete eggs. This shows very good freshness and elegance, a style I have also seen in some of the Yllera wines from this vintage (Jesús Yllera and Yllera Dominus), floral, perfumed and elegant, with a vibrant palate with very good freshness and clean, focused flavors. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2018.
Vivaltus is the new project in Ribera del Duero from the Yllera family. They purchase top-quality grapes from old vines and ferment and age the wines with the advice of Bordeaux guru Jean-Claude Berrouet. I have not yet seen any of the Vivaltus wines in the market. I tasted the bottled 2016s, but the bottles didn't have labels. I don't know when this will be released, and I already wrote about them (and was impressed) some 16 months ago. Vivaltus will soon be an important name in Ribera del Duero.

The owner is the Yllera family who have been making quality wines for 6 generations. Currently the company is run by a team of professional young people led by the brothers and sisters Marcos and Carlos Yllera and we have taken Yllera Bodegas Y Viñedos to the top in the wine sector. They are always looking for the best quality-price-personality relationship in their wines and thanks to the continuous investments and expansions in the wineries and vineyards, the barrels and technology. The family's latest project, VivaltuS, is the prestigious project of Spanish winemaker Montxo Martinez and legendary French winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet (the man behind Château Petrus and Dominus).
