Description
Joseph Phelps, a Colorado contractor, bought his first vineyards in Napa Valley in 1972. Together with German winemaker Walter Schug (who later opened the influential Schug Winery), in 1974 he created the first Insignia, one of the first Bordeaux blends of California. Insignia has since been seen as one of California's icon wines. Joseph Phelps was acquired by LVMH in June this year and they will not be launching an Insignia in 2020
The Cabernet Sauvignon Insignia from Phelps is a stately wine bursting with blackberry jam, tar, spices, leather and liquorice. It shows a wonderful depth and richness supported by serious, imposing tannins that ensure an unprecedented longevity. The wine was aged for 24 months in new French oak. Ideally, the Insignia should be bought by those who can be patient, as this wine will only get better with age and has a drinking window of at least 40 years. It is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% and 2% Malbec. Fresh and focused with building layers of black cherry, blackberry, spice box and vanilla essence. Plush, velvety texture and seamless tannins culminate in a long, lingering finish.

The 2019 Insignia is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. The vineyard sources this year include: 32% Yountville (Oak Knoll District), 23% Banca Dorada (Rutherford), 14% Suscol (South Napa Valley), 14% Home Ranch (St. Helena), 12% Las Rocas (Stags Leap District), 3% Barboza (Stags Leap District) and 2% El Venadito (Oak Knoll District). The wine is aging for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little swirling to unlock a gorgeous perfume of black cherry compote, stewed plums and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of bay leaves, red roses, underbrush and pencil lead plus a hint of menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers impactful black fruit preserves layers with finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and layered. 18,000 cases are due to be made. (Tasted as a barrel sample.)

Joseph Phelps is one of the great winemakers from California. First of all, amassing a lot of fortune with one of the largest American construction companies, he has followed his passion and bought a farm in Spring Valley in the real heart of the Napa Valley in 1973 and planted his first vines with the ambition to make world class wines with the top Bordeauxs as an example. The Insignia was his first wine and it has since grown into a flagship wine and is one of the best wines in the world. Joseph Phelps now owns 150ha in the Napa Valley, in eight vineyards across the region. His passion for wine also made him decide to buy two great (old) vineyards in Sonoma Coast (Freestone Vineyards) in 1999 where he currently makes great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Joseph Phelps is synonymous with the top of the world and is a winemaker where grape and aftertaste always prevail.
