Description
The beautiful Brunello di Montalcino 2016 has an intense dark ruby colour with a silky soft attack that is felt both in the bouquet and on the palate. The wine smells of dark plum and wild cherry, and those bright primary fruit notes descend into softer layers of rosehip and lavender sachets. The acidity of the wine is fantastic which keeps the wine very digestible. It is incredibly soft and pure, lifting the wine with salty minerals, while sweet notes of cherry and raspberry slowly begin to penetrate. Yet they leave behind youthful, firm tannins. This 2016 is a very classic vintage and is expected to last until 2045 (if stored properly), but why wait so long!

About Poggio di Sotto
Poggio di Sotto was founded in 1989 and currently has 32 hectares of land, of which 12 hectares are vineyards. The estate is located in the south-east of Montalcino, close to the banks of the Orcia river and Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano almost 2,000m high. This is one of the best areas in Montalcino, due to the soil composition, full of minerals and the particular microclimate. In summer the days are sunny and warm, but at night it cools down considerably, which is extremely important for the development of the aromas in a wine. The wine cellar was built with modern technology, but within its walls you will find the true Tuscan atmosphere, where the demanding art of winemaking is maintained with great expertise. Giulio Gambelli is one of Italy's best wine consultants.

The beautiful 2016 Brunello di Montalcino possesses deep inner shine and a glossy nature that transcends the bouquet and the mouthfeel. The wine is redolent of dark plum and wild cherry, and those bright primary fruit tones descend into softer layers of rose hip and lavender sachet. The wine's acidity hits the palate with balanced determination and instantly livens up the senses. This classic vintage will be remembered for its length and pedigree.
These wines from Maria Iris and Claudio Tipa (of ColleMassari) renewed my faith in the enormous potential of Montalcino. I wrote about the "soul of Brunello" in my introductory article and played around with a definition of what that means. You could read my words, or just pop your nose into a glass with any one of the wines reviewed here, and that spirit would be revealed to you. Not not only did these wines (particularly the Poggio di Sotto 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva—a wine I can still taste in my mind) renew my faith, they sparked my passion. I can't wait to get back to Montalcino. Poggio di Sotto is an estate that spares no expense (all the wines are now organic, and the estate has old vines up to 45 years old and is home to 120 biotypes of Sangiovese), so it would be rather tragic if the wines weren't so good. However, these are better than good. I think they are a new benchmark for the region.

A chewy, dusty-textured red with lots of intense tannins and fresh blue fruit, as well as black cherries and some orange-peel undertones. It’s full-bodied and tight with firm tannins at the end. Closed. Give it another two or three years to come around. Try after 2023.

It's such a pleasure to taste the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Poggio di Sotto; this is easily one of the wines of the vintage. Its bouquet is pure class, balsamic, exotic and spicy. A blend of dried orange and cloves gives way to sweet lavender and black cherries. Elegant and silky, yet with cooling acidity and depths of tart red berry fruits, the 2016 impresses further with a salty savoriness and a sense of sheer energy. It leaves a coating of dusty tannins and dark florals to resonate, displaying a youthful concentration slowly easing as traces of licorice fade through the incredibly long finish.
