Description
The Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio Riserva is the first Barolo to be distributed worldwide through the Place du Bordeaux. Only the affiliated wine merchants (including Grand Cru wines) are able to obtain this wine. The Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio Riserva comes from La Morra from a vineyard with an area of 2.5 Ha. The soil consists of calcareous marl of sedimentary marine origin from the Tortonian period (9 million years ago) which is characterized by an alkaline pH, poor in organic matter, but rich in microelements such as magnesium and manganese. The vineyard has a South, south-west exposure and is located at an altitude of 320 meters. Of course, harvesting is done by hand only. The Riserva is only made in the top years. The wine is aged for 12 months in 700 liter tonneaux, then aged for another 2 years in large barrels. The wine is then bottled without undergoing filtration and ages in the bottle for a minimum of 24 months before being released on the market.
In the glass, the Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio Riserva has a deep garnet red colour. On the nose, this top barolo is extraordinarily complex, elegant and pleasantly fresh, with clear notes of red berries, chocolate, mint and very fine spices; it is also characterized by very pleasant balsamic hints typical of this cru. In the mouth the wine has an amazing structure, captivating softness and perfect harmony and the captivating finish is persistent and fresh. A wine with enormous storage potential and a perfect accompaniment to tagliolini with d'Alba truffle, stewed meat, risotto with Barolo, matured cheeses
The 2016 vintage will be long remembered for its rare qualitative excellence. It was a harvest characterized by a climate that followed the normal patterns of the seasons, without meteorological anomalies, producing very healthy grapes and allowing them to reach perfect and uniform ripening in classical times. An adequate thinning of the trusses carried out at the end of August meant that in the last 40 days the plant transferred all its energy to the remaining few trusses, bringing about a beautiful ripening, favored by sunny days and cool nights. The harvest took place in classical times (October 6-12). A vintage of excellence". Stefano Chiarlo, winemaker

The Michele Chiarlo 2018 Barolo Cerequio opens to a pretty lacework of aromas with smaller berry fruits, crushed stone, rusty nail, pressed lilac or blue flower and a dusting of spicy licorice powder. The bouquet is vertical and tight, leading to a very precise succession of varietal tones that flavor the wine's polished finish. The Cerequio has ample power as well, with etched tannins that grip this Nebbiolo firmly to the palate.

The 2019 Barolo Cerequio is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, leather, incense, tobacco, mocha, dried flowers and chocolate all meld together. As always, the Chiarlo Cerequio is dark, ample and imposing; more power than finesse, elements that build nicely into the substantial finish.

Michele Chiarlo owns plots in some of Piedmont's most highly regarded vineyards. The wines see 18-22 days on the skins. Malolactic fermentation and aging are mostly done in cask, with some 700-liter barrels in the mix. Aging in wood is around 24 months. The wines are often a bit forward and best suited to near and medium-term drinking.

Michele Chiarlo founded his winery in 1956 with one clear goal: to acquire vineyards in the best crus in Piemonte and thereby make wines that capture the essence of the terroir. Michele Chiarlo started his wine company in 1956. The region where he was born was chosen, Canelli, near Asti in the Region of Piedmont. Here he could make his dream come true in the most unbelievably beautiful wine region in the world.
Tradition, discipline and passion with great care for the land and nature were the most important starting points for him. The company now has 120 hectares of vineyards in Monferrato, the Langhe, (La Morra and Barolo) and the Gavi regions. He has also been the driving force behind the new Barbera Nizza DOC. At Michele Chiarlo, the focus of each vineyard is on the individual terroir and the individuality of the wines. From 2022, the top model, the Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio, will be the first Barolo Cru to be offered via the Place de Bordeaux (this is where selected wine merchants around the world are allowed to buy, including, of course, Grandcru wines).
Michele Chiarlo is one of the few wineries to have a star in the Gambero Rosso. You only get this star if you drink 10x a tre bicchieri or-too-three red glasses, the highest rating of a wine.
