Description
Château Montrose: tradition and modern craftsmanship
Château Montrose is one of the most respected estates on Bordeaux's Left Bank. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé since 1855, the château in Saint-Estèphe is known for its robust yet meticulous style. Since 2006, it has been led by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who have transformed the estate with sustainable vineyard practices, technological innovation, and an even greater focus on terroir expression.
The location and terroir of Saint-Estèphe
Montrose lies on a vast gravel plateau directly on the Gironde Estuary, creating perfectly drained soil and a temperate microclimate. The deep gravel soils with underlying clay layers give the wines their structure, strength, and aging potential. Thanks to the direct influence of the river, the grapes ripen evenly, even in warm years.
Grapes, blending and vinification in 2015
The 2015 harvest was ideal thanks to a sunny summer with ample rainfall in August and a dry, mild September. The blend consists of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. After a rigorous selection by plot, the grapes are fermented separately. Aging takes place in French oak barriques, approximately 65% of which are new, for 18 months.
Tasting note: balance between power and finesse
In the glass, Château Montrose 2015 reveals a deep ruby red. The nose is refined and intense, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite, violets, cocoa, and a hint of smoke.
The palate is powerful and full-bodied, yet beautifully precise. Ripe blackberries, dark plums, and crisp acidity are supported by silky tannins and a subtle spiciness. The structure is firm yet polished, and the finish is long, mineral, and harmonious. This vintage stands out for its balance, aromatic depth, and fresh energy.
Reviews and potential
The 2015 was highly praised, with several international ratings of between 95 and 96 points. The wine combines youthful vigor with remarkable elegance and is particularly well-suited for bottle aging. Expect peak drinkability between 2025 and 2045, with further development potential under favorable conditions.

Only 36% of the production went into the 2015 Montrose, a wine that's reminiscent of a smaller-scaled, less profound version of the estate's 2009. Bursting with aromas of dark berries, cigar wrapper, loamy soil, incense and smoke, it's full-bodied, broad and ample, with a rich, enveloping profile and a long, expansive finish. The 2014 has more potential, but if you're looking for a Montrose vintage to drink young, this is it.

Intensity and clarity of fruit is so insane. Blackberries, spices such as cloves, blueberries, sandalwood and dried lavender. Full body and such a beautiful, dense center palate with perfectly polished tannins. Extremely long and beautiful. One of the best young Montroses in a long, long time. Drink in 2024.

Fleshy for the vintage, with good plum and dark currant fruit lined with ample tobacco, warm paving stone, bay leaf and alder notes on the slightly dusty finish. Not a charmer, but this is integrated and shows range and depth for the vintage.

From: Bordeaux 2015 At Age Ten (Jun 2025)
The 2015 Montrose has wonderful lift and vigor on the nose that puts it ahead of its peers. Blackberry, iodine, cedar and greater mineralité come through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. It's quite fleshy for a Montrose, which renders this one of the more approachable vintages. There is a keen countervailing line of acidity with a dash of spice on the finish. Excellent.

From: Finally: Bordeaux 2015 In Bottle (Jul 2019)
The 2015 Montrose has a very intense bouquet of blackberry, raspberry coulis, iodine and violet scents that blossom in the glass, demonstrating more exuberance than (what transpired to be) the 2015 Meyney. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very well judged acidity, taut and linear with satisfying freshness and poise on the finish. Maybe this just has the edge over the Meyney. Superb. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

From: 2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story... (Feb 2018)
The 2015 Montrose has developed very nicely over the last two years. As it showed from barrel, the 2015 is a relatively light-bodied wine for this site. Even so, all the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. I suspect the 2015 needs at least a handful of years to become fully expressive and will age for decades, although it will never be a huge wine in the style of viscerally thrilling vintages like 2014, 2016 and so many others. The 2015 is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in French oak, 30% new.
- By Antonio Galloni on December 2017
These two wines from Montrose are certainly good, but they lack depth and structure that is typical of the strongest vintages.

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
