"Wow. This is the essence of Montrose, with blackberry, blackcurrant, crushed stone and earth. I have not tasted a Montrose like this in 42 years of my career - James Suckling"
2023, a mild and temperate year, reveals its flamboyant personality with delay. This vintage, with its assertive temperament, is the source of refined wines that harmoniously combine opulence and tension, grandeur and precision. As an ode to the terroir of Château Montrose, the newly created cuvées celebrate the estate’s exceptional terraces.

1. Grilled beef ribs with grilled zucchini and thyme potatoes
The proteins and fat in the meat soften the tannins, while the grilled vegetables and herbs enhance the earthy and spicy notes in the wine.
2. Leg of lamb with garlic, rosemary and black olives
The savoury, spicy flavours complement the power of the wine, accentuating the dark fruit and structure, with a hint of Mediterranean depth.
3. Coq au vin with mushrooms, bacon and silver onions
The long-braised chicken in red wine builds bridges to the aromatic complexity of Montrose, while the umami character allows the ripe fruit to speak beautifully.
4. Baked eggplant with tomato, Parmesan and oregano
The soft, toasted textures and savory flavors of this dish complement the concentration and spiciness of the wine. The cheese enhances the mouthfeel.
5. Duck breast with beetroot, black cherries and sage jus
The combination of juicy meat, earthy beetroot and fruity sauce brings out both the floral and ripe profile of the wine. The spicy jus connects the elements.
6. Venison loin with chestnut puree, Brussels sprouts and black garlic jus
The intense flavour of game and the earthy chestnuts match the strength and depth of the wine. The black garlic adds a soft, sweet-spicy dimension that is in balance with the wine structure.

The 2023 Montrose is another brilliant wine from an estate that's now routinely among Bordeaux's very best, year in, year out. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, derived exclusively from the estate's historic core on the fourth terrace situated just in front of the château itself, it unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis and wild berries mingled with notions of lilac, violet and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, deep and layered, with a textural attack that segues into a dense, multidimensional mid-palate framed by beautifully ripe tannins and lively acids, it concludes with a long, resonant finish. It will be worth a special effort to seek out.
This large estate overlooking the Gironde in Saint-Estèphe produces some of Bordeaux's greatest and longest-lived wines, and the last 15 or so years have seen it benefit from sustained and intelligently directed investment. There's a brand-new winery and cellars, of course, but there's a lot of work going on in the vineyards too. When Olivier and Martin Bouygues acquired Château Montrose from the Charmolüe family in 2006, the estate included fully 17 hectares of pre-clonal vines dating back to the early 20th century, and a massal selection program has since identified 80 viable individuals, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, for use when replanting (the same efforts are currently being lavished on Merlot, drawing on a block behind the château acquired from Phélan-Ségur). Now, cover crops are being trialed, and the soils are being cultivated more superficially to avoid disrupting the microbiome. Winemaking is rather classical, with maturation in some 60% new oak.
In 2023, Montrose was largely spared by mildew, receiving less rain than many other estates in June, and harvest rolled out between September 5 and 28. As in 2022, the grand vin this year derives exclusively from the Terrace 4 gravels in front of the estate itself, Montrose's historic core terroir. Readers looking for more information about this de-facto first growth are directed to my feature published in the December 2023 Week 3 issue of The Wine Advocate.

Wow. This is the essence of Montrose, with blackberry, blackcurrant, crushed stone and earth. I have not tasted a Montrose like this in 42 years of my career. It has a much more vertical nature to it, with layered tannins that go very deep and long, The muscular structure and intensity is something else. This is a new era for Montrose. It is now made from only 45 hectares of vineyards right in front of the chateau, instead of about 60 before. 75% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot and 4% cabernet franc.

Drinking Window
2033 - 2075
The 2023 Montrose is focused on the original terroir of the estate, known as Terrace 4, located in front of the river. It comprises 45 hectares, around 12 to 15 hectares less than previous vintages so as to capture the expression of Montrose classified in 1855. Picked from September 5 to 28 and matured in 60% new oak, this has a very intense and focused bouquet: pure black fruit with just a touch of strawberry, hints of violet petals developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins—very pure, with pitch-perfect acidity. This gains depth toward the finish but maintains a sense of linearity that ensures it is one of the vintage’s finest contributions from the Left Bank. Magnificent.

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
