Veuve Clicquot was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Murion, but became famous through the continuation of the company by his son's widow ('veuve') Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, in 1805. She was a formidable and innovative woman. Her motto 'only one quality, the finest' is still guiding for Veuve Clicquot, the second largest champagne house in the world. Madame Clicquot, La Grande Dame, has created many groundbreaking innovations in the champagne world such as the first rosé and first vintage champagnes. The 'pupitre' is also her invention; In this table with slanting holes, the bottle could be placed in such a way that by regularly turning, the rémuage, the yeast sediment sinks towards the neck. The champagnes have a full, rich and powerful character.

Champagnes are often made by blending various vintages and in this way the good houses try to produce consistent quality. If a vintage was very beautiful and becomes even more complex due to additional aging, it is called a vintage champagne and the champagne is also given a vintage. In this case this applies to the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Blanc from the year 2015.

The 2015 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Blanc is the successor to Vintage 2002, 2004 and 2008, 2012 and is therefore the fifth Vintage champagne from Veuve Clicquot in this decade. It has an blend of approximately 51% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Meunier. For the first time since the 1960s, oak barrels have been used to mature a small part (5%) of the wine. The grapes in this champagne come from just 17 vineyards, all of which are Premier or Grand Cru classified. With a dosage of 8 grams per liter and years of maturation, this is a great champagne and is also packaged in a beautiful gift box. In the glass the wine has a clear, fresh color with a golden sheen. In the nose we smell aromas of citrus and roasted pear with hints of roasted nuts. On the palate, the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Blanc 2015 is subtle and mineral with a fruity, tight aftertaste. Delicious with dishes with fish, crustaceans and shellfish

Champagne with a story that never gets old. Veuve Clicquot is so much more than a yellow label.

History of Veuve Clicquot

The story starts in 1772, when Philippe Clicquot founded his champagne house in Reims. But true fame came later, thanks to Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin. She married François Clicquot, who sadly passed away at a young age. At just 27 years old, she took control of the house. In an era where women rarely ran businesses, she made her mark. She became known as “La Veuve Clicquot” – the Widow Clicquot – and grew into an icon of the champagne world.

Under her leadership, the modern method of making champagne bright and sparkling was refined. She introduced the technique of remuage, where bottles are slowly turned so that the sediment collects in the neck. A simple yet brilliant idea that made champagne famous around the world.

Vineyards and location

Veuve Clicquot owns more than 390 hectares of vineyards in Champagne. That’s special, as many houses buy most of their grapes. The vineyards are spread across the best cru villages, including Bouzy, Verzenay and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier are the main grapes here. Together they shape the house style: powerful, fresh and structured.

Most of the vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir. It gives the wines their recognizable depth and character. Chardonnay adds freshness and finesse, while Meunier brings a touch of fruitiness.

Climate and terroir

Champagne sits in the north of France. Summers are cool, winters are mild, and the climate can be unpredictable. Perfect for grapes that shouldn’t get too ripe. The soil is mainly chalk and limestone, which offers great drainage and a mineral edge in the wines. Combined with the changing seasons, this results in grapes with tension and freshness – exactly what champagne needs.

Fun facts about Veuve Clicquot

  • The famous “Yellow Label” was introduced in 1877 and became the instant signature of the house.
  • Veuve Clicquot was the first champagne exported worldwide, from Russia to the United States.
  • In 2010, 168 bottles of 19th century Veuve Clicquot were found in the Baltic Sea – still drinkable and remarkably fresh.
  • The house owns one of the largest chalk cellars in Reims, endless tunnels where millions of bottles quietly age.
