Samen met Château Pétrus en Ausone is Château Cheval Blanc één van de legendes van de rechteroever. Bezit altijd een enorme concentratie, maar tegelijkertijd finesse en frisheid. Le Petit Cheval vertegenwoordigt 10% van de productie van het domein en is een blend van gelijke delen Merlot en Cabernet Franc. Op een bepaalde manier resulteert dat in een Petit Cheval die heel erg Cheval is, wat betekent dat hij zeer expressief is in het bouquet maar minder genereus op het gehemelte.
De Petit Cheval uit 2019 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru heeft een zeer aantrekkelijk boeket van ceder en tabak dat precies en uiterst goed gefocust lijkt. De eik is fraaie geïntegreerd. Het gehemelte is medium-bodied met een aoma's, zoet en gelaagd zwart fruit, romigheid satijnen textuur met een aanhoudende en verleidelijke, moderne stijl finish.

Exhibiting aromas of plums, sweet wild berries, rose petals, spices and cigar wrapper, the 2019 Le Petit Cheval is medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with supple tannins and succulent acids. Pierre-Olivier Clouet explains that his aspiration is to produce 100% Cheval Blanc and that, as a result, this cuvée simply represents anything that doesn't belong in the grand vin's blend. Of course, however, it shares some of the latter's DNA.
One of Bordeaux's most complex terroirs, Cheval Blanc sits on the site of an ancient river delta, with (to generalize) clay-rich soils in the lower-lying parts where rivulets once flowed and gravel and sand elsewhere. This complexity is reflected, of course, in the resulting wine, but also in how it is farmed and made, with thoughtful use of cover crops according to soil type and parcel-by-parcel vinification. A concerted effort is being made, moreover, to bring life back to the vineyard, with hedges of native species to act as wildlife corridors, and fruit trees planted among the vines. The same attention to detail that's applied in the vineyards, for example with regard to developing and testing an in-house massal selection, is applied in the cellar, where cooperage trials are notable for their exigence. All of that shows in the glass. On my most recent visit, technical director Pierre-Olivier Clouet and I tasted the 2019 in the context of the last 10 vintages of Cheval Blanc, and it stood out even in such illustrious company, with—to my palate—2016 its only plausible rival for the title of Cheval Blanc of the decade. Readers with the requisite disposable income won't want to miss it.

This is so floral and beautiful with roses, violets and some lavender. Spices and stems, too. Medium-bodied, firm and bright with compact density to the wine. Beautiful tannins. This is extremely structured. Second wine of Cheval Blanc. 56% merlot and 44% cabernet franc. Try after 2027.

The 2019 Petit Cheval is a stunning second wine - if it can even be called that. In 2019, Petit Cheval is a blend of four parcels that were in the Grand Vin in 2018. Dark, supple and expressive, the 2019 offers up an exotic mélange of black cherry, spice, new leather and graphite, all of which build effortlessly in the glass. The Petit represents 5.5% of the château's production in 2019, but it is more of a second selection, as 12% of the wine that year was sold in bulk.

Château Cheval Blanc in Saint-Émilion
Château Cheval Blanc ligt op de grens van Saint-Émilion en Pomerol. Het behoort tot de meest gerespecteerde wijnhuizen van Bordeaux. Lange tijd droeg het domein de titel Premier Grand Cru Classé A, de hoogste classificatie in Saint-Émilion, tot het zich in 2021 terugtrok uit de officiële indeling. De reputatie is sindsdien onverminderd sterk gebleven.
Historie en ontwikkeling
De oorsprong van Cheval Blanc gaat terug tot de 19e eeuw. In 1852 kochten Jean-Jacques Ducasse en later de familie Fourcaud-Laussac stukken grond die bekend stonden om hun unieke terroir. In de loop van de decennia groeide het domein uit tot een van de iconen van Bordeaux. Sinds 1998 is Cheval Blanc eigendom van Bernard Arnault en Albert Frère, die modernisering en internationale uitstraling verder hebben versterkt.
Terroir en druivenrassen
Het domein beslaat zo’n 39 hectare, verdeeld over een mozaïek van klei, zand en grind. Juist die variatie maakt het terroir zo bijzonder. In tegenstelling tot veel buren in Saint-Émilion ligt de nadruk hier op cabernet franc, goed voor meer dan de helft van de aanplant. Merlot vormt de tweede pijler, aangevuld met een klein aandeel cabernet sauvignon. Deze samenstelling geeft de wijnen hun kenmerkende verfijning, kracht en aromatische complexiteit.
Oude stokken en vinificatie
Veel stokken zijn meer dan veertig jaar oud, sommige zelfs aangeplant in de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw. Elk perceel wordt apart gevinifieerd om de specifieke eigenschappen van de bodem te behouden. De vergisting vindt plaats in betonnen cuves, waarna de wijn rijpt in nieuwe eikenhouten vaten. Pas na strenge selectie worden de beste vaten geblend tot de Grand Vin.
Iconische jaargangen
Château Cheval Blanc heeft door de jaren heen talloze legendarische wijnen voortgebracht. De 1947 is misschien wel de beroemdste en wordt vaak genoemd als een van de grootste Bordeaux ooit gemaakt. Ook recente jaargangen, zoals 2005, 2010 en 2016, behoren tot de top en laten zien dat het huis zijn reputatie voortdurend waarmaakt.
Tweede wijn: Le Petit Cheval
NNaast de Grand Vin produceert Cheval Blanc ook een tweede wijn: Le Petit Cheval. Deze wijn wordt gemaakt van druiven en vaten die niet in de eerste selectie terechtkomen, maar nog steeds het karakter van het domein laten zien. De laatste jaren brengt het huis ook een witte variant uit, gemaakt van sauvignon blanc.
