Wines from Lebanon

Lebanon is a small country, but quite densely populated. Officially the country is called: Republic of Lebanon. Lebanon is located in Asia, on the east coast of the Mediterranean. Lebanon borders Israel to the south and has a border with Syria to the east and north. The country belongs to the Arab League. Viticulture is not new to Lebanon, it is one of the oldest wine growing regions in the world. In the Beeka Valley, a wine press from the bronze age was even found (the Phoenicians were active here). The famous Bacchus temple in Baalbek bears witness to the fact that the Romans already made wine there.

Today, viticulture mainly takes place in the Bekaa Valley, around Baalbek. It is warm and sunny in this area. About 5 million liters of wine are produced every year. Lebanon has approximately 30,000 hectares of vineyard. The Beeka Valley is ideal for grape cultivation. The valley is about 8 kilometers wide and lies between 2 mountain ranges at about 1000 meters height. The climate is exceptionally warm. Fortunately, the altitude provides a strong night-time cooling. As a result, the fruity aromas are preserved in the grapes. Thanks to snow from the mountains, enough water flows in the Valley. The substrate consists of a mixture of clay, pebbles and gray limestone. The microclimate is so ideal that the vines usually remain perfectly healthy. The constant violence of war in this region is a negative factor. But despite that, they have always continued to make wine. Only in the years 1976 and 1984 no wine was made because of the war. The grapes had to be transported across the line of fire for a distance of almost 100 km to the winery just north of Beirut. After more than a thousand years of alcoholic prohibition as a result of Islam, the Jesuits resumed viticulture in 1857.
