Bianco di Alessano
The Bianco d'Alessano is a white grape from Puglia (the 'heel' of Italy) and it can thrive on poor soils. It has traditionally grown there as well as in Calabria. It therefore fits perfectly with the dry areas of the hills of the Valle d'Itria. The majority of Bianco d'Alessano's plantations are in Puglia, especially in the province of Taranto. Here the grape is usually blended with Verdeca in the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wines from Gravina, Lizzano, Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Ostuni.
The grape also has a long history as a grape variety in the production of vermouth. Bianco d'Alessano ripens late and retains its acidity well and for that reason it is certainly a wine that does well in warm regions and is for that reason also blended with Verdecca. Nowadays, more and more 100% Bianco d'Alessano wines are made. Often with a barrique aging which goes very well with this Puglia wine.
