In the 19th century, it was customary at that time to "hermit" the wines. Bordeaux châteaux would add to their wines a certain amount of wine from the Rhône - specifically from the Hermitage region - whose syrah would enhance the structure and strength of the claret. In the 21st century, Château Palmer came up with the idea of bringing this forgotten tradition back to life. The aim is to create a unique wine, combining wine from Palmer and a small part of a great wine from the northern Côtes du Rhône. The Château Palmer Historical XIXth Century Wine 2020 (lot 20.20) is the 10th vintage produced by Palmer and this is a blend of: 44% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Syrah which has matured for 22 months in new French oak. They have only released a total of 3,000 bottles in May 2023. All individually packed in a wooden box. Here's what the Chateau says: "....Is this still a Bordeaux wine? It's better; a revitalization drawing on elsewhere to re-en-chant the here and now"

ABOUT PALMER

Classified as a 3ieme Cru Classe 1855, Château Palmer consistently outperforms the rest of the wines in its class and is widely regarded as one of the finest wines in the Médoc. Château Palmer was founded in the first half of the nineteenth century by the English general, Charles Palmer. In 1814, on his way back from the Peninsular War, where he had fought with Wellington against Napoleon, General Palmer acquired Gascq Castle and gave it his own name. In 1938, the Sichel family joined forces with a group of wine merchant friends to buy the property.

Château Palmer is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation in the Bordeaux wine region. The 66 hectares of vineyards have a gravel soil and the vines overlook the Gironde River. The area with its rich ancient history and nourishing microclimate is a fantastic environment for the vines. Here they can flourish and grow under the passionate care of the people of Château Palmer. Behind every great wine is a great terroir. This is also the case at Château Palmer, which is located on a long strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde. The land is well drained, rich in the deposits of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. It is difficult soil for agriculture, but exceptional for grapes. Of course, the vines also need good care in order to perform optimally. And that is certainly entrusted to the employees of Château Palmer! Full of passion and love for the vines, they cultivate the demanding terroir. The people of this winery are more than just colleagues. Together they embrace the common core values of Château Palmer and are therefore extremely dynamic, curious, passionate, open-minded and determined. In short, they live for and with the vineyards.
