Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm and the power of classic Mosel Riesling
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the Mosel's most iconic producers and is known worldwide for its unparalleled precision and elegance. Under the leadership of Dr. Katharina Prüm, the estate remains true to a classic style characterized by low alcohol, vibrant acidity, and a crystal-clear expression of terroir. The wines are slowly fermented, almost always with natural yeasts, and matured for a long time in stainless steel to preserve their pure character.
Zeltinger Sonnenuhr is among the estate's most refined and expressive vineyards. In 2024, a challenging yet high-quality season resulted in a collection described by several critics as sensational. The Spätlese from this vineyard is one of the highlights of the year, combining intensity with a remarkably subtle structure.
The unique terroir of Zeltinger Sonnenuhr
Zeltinger Sonnenuhr is grown on steep slopes with blue slate, providing optimal exposure for slow maturation and refined aromatic expression. Unlike Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the character of Zeltinger Sonnenuhr is often slightly spicier, smokier, and deeper in minerality, with a more pronounced stoniness.
In 2024, Zeltingen and Wehlen were almost completely spared from frost damage, but neighboring villages such as Graach and Bernkastel were hit by frost and hail, resulting in lower overall production. The wet spring revitalized the roots of the old vines, while the temperate summer, free of extreme heat, ensured a perfect balance between ripeness and freshness. The harvest, which took place from October 1st to 31st, required intensive selection due to variable ripeness.
The Riesling grape in its most refined Spätlese expression
In Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Riesling displays a unique combination of depth and lightness. The grape benefits from the mineral slate soil, which imparts tension, saline notes, and an elegant, elongated structure. In 2024, Riesling yielded aromas ranging from apricot to green citrus fruit, with delicate spicy undertones. The balance between ripe aromas and vibrant acidity makes this Spätlese energetic, clear, and remarkably layered.
The aromatic precision of the 2024 vintage is striking. The herbs, flowers, and stone fruit are clearly evident, while the overall aroma remains light, subtle, and refined.
Vinification and the special harvest of 2024
As is customary at Joh. Jos. Prüm, the harvest was carried out in multiple rounds, allowing each plot to be picked at its optimal moment. Rain, which fell mid-harvest, forced the team to be extra careful and selective. This resulted in a wine with remarkable focus and purity.
Fermentation was slow and cool, focused on preserving the fresh acidity and aromatic tension. Tank aging enhances the wine's precision, while the low alcohol emphasizes its finesse. The 2024 vintage produced a Spätlese that is both classic and exceptionally expressive, with a character completely true to the terroir.
Colour, aroma and taste of Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese 2024
The wine has a pale golden yellow color with green highlights. The nose reveals notes of wet slate, dried herbs, a light smokiness, and subtle floral hints. A hint of Reine Claude plum, green citrus, and apricot gives the wine a layered and appealing aroma.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with lively tension. The taste begins with ripe plum and apricot, followed by salty minerality, lime zest, and a spicy undertone. The subtle sweetness is almost completely absorbed by the energetic acidity, making the wine light-footed, supple, and elegant. The finish is long, slender, stony, and exceptionally precise.
Maturation potential and development
The 2024 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese has aging potential until at least 2060. The wine is already appealing for its fruity freshness, but will develop greater depth with age. With aging, notes of honey, tea, spices, and dried fruit will emerge, without losing its vibrant mineral core.
With its balance of richness and tension, this Spätlese remains impressive both young and mature. It's a wine for lovers of classic Mosel Riesling in a pure, elegant style.

The apricot aromas make this Spatlese stand out from the pack in the 2024 vintage. But there’s nothing opulent about this wine in spite of the generous juiciness on the medium-bodied palate. In fact, it is sleek, focused and very crisp in the long, complete finish. Drink or hold.

From: 2024 Mosel, Saar and Ruwer: Tales of Woe and Wow (Oct 2025)
The 2024 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese offers wet stone and dried herbs on the nose, almost like deadnettle crushed on slate, with the tenderest smokiness. The palate then adds a gorgeous streak of ripe Reine Claude plum with a juiciness that softens the stone. It becomes agile, sinuous and animated. What lovely character, subtlety, elegance and astonishing saltiness this has that seemingly swallows most of the sweetness. Its subtle, stony length is remarkable. (Medium)
- By Anne Krebiehl MW on August 2025
Dr. Katharina Prüm reported only marginal frost damage in Graach and Bernkastel, with Wehlen and Zeltingen spared completely. However, hail hit sites in Graach and Bernkastel, which meant limited quantities from these sites. The wet spring brought almost twice the average precipitation, a boon for the well-drained slopes. Apart from a few hot days in August, there were no extreme temperatures in the summer. Harvest took place between October 1 and 31, with a short break for rain. After the rain, Prüm was able to pick some Auslesen and Auslesen Goldkapsel. “We selected a lot and visited many parcels often due to relatively uneven ripeness within the same vine. We kept checking and picking what was right, so it turned into a laborious harvest,” she said. There is no Kabinett from the Badstube in 2024, due to frost and hail. The wines are a stunning collection of real thrill—wonderfully classic and so expressive.

Weingut Prüm (Weingut Johan Josef Prüm) is a winery with a rich history, the roots of the Prüm family have been in the Moselle area for more than 800 years. In 1911 this famous winery was founded by Johan Josef Prüm and in 1920 son Sebastian started working in the family business.
Son Sebastiaan is the founder of the, to this day, recognizable style for which Prüm wines are praised worldwide. Sebastiaan Prüm died in 1969 and on behalf of his sons, Dr. Manfred Prüm and younger brother Wolfgang Prüm, presided over it. Today, the winery is managed by Manfred and his daughter Katharina Prüm.
The house has completely focused on the renovation of the Riesling. Most of the vines are not grafted, this was not necessary because the Phylloxera louse cannot survive among the slate on which the vineyards are grown. Depending on the harvest, Prüm produces between 10,000 and 13,000 boxes annually. The vineyards cover an area of 22 hectares in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube respectively.
