A classic Pauillac with finesse, structure and impressive ageing potential

Château Pichon Baron: historic winery in Pauillac

Château Pichon Baron is an iconic wine estate in the Bordeaux region and belongs to the Deuxième Grands Crus Classés according to the 1855 classification. Located in Pauillac, on the left bank of the Gironde, and managed by AXA Millésimes, the estate has focused for decades on producing powerful, elegant wines with great ageing potential, from the oldest vines on the estate's best plots.

The terroir and climate of Pauillac in 2024

The vineyards of Château Pichon Baron are situated on gravelly soils with excellent drainage, crucial during the wet and cool spring of 2024. After a mild winter with extreme rainfall (up to 900mm by the end of March), flowering in June was difficult due to mildew and irregular fruit set. The summer was hot and very dry, which made for a slow but steady ripening. In September, complex weather conditions made for a late but balanced ripening process, resulting in grapes with beautiful concentration and elegance.

Grape composition and harvest of Château Pichon Baron 2024

The grapes were harvested manually and rigorously selected using optical sorting and manual inspection. The harvest dates were as follows:

  • Merlot: September 25 – October 3
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: October 3 – 10

The final blend of this vintage consists of:

  • 87% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 13% Merlot

This composition underlines the powerful and structured character of this classic Pauillac.

Vinification and maturation of 2024 Pichon Baron

After a careful harvesting process, vinification was carried out using natural yeasts and gentle extraction at low temperatures. A gravity-driven process and minimal sulphite addition were used in combination with yeast-based bioprotection. Remontage (pump-overs) and delestage (transfer) were used sparingly to preserve finesse. Maturation takes place over a period of 18 months, of which 70% in new French oak barrels and 30% in one-year-old barrels.

Taste profile of Château Pichon Baron 2024

The wine is a pure expression of Pauillac: deep ruby red in colour, with aromas of ripe black fruits such as cassis and blackberries, refined spices and subtle wood influences. In the mouth, the wine is full and structured, with silky tannins, a lively acidity and a long, precise finish. The alcohol content is 12.7%, with a pH of 3.71 and a total acidity of 3.41 g/l, which indicates elegance and freshness despite the hot summer.
