Description
The 2019 Pichon-Longueville Baron will go down as one of the best wines from this château in modern times, together with the 2016, 2010 and 1989 vintages. In the glass it unfolds with aromas of cassis and plum, mixed with notes of cigar wrapper, sweet loam soil and violets. This wine is full-bodied, velvety and layered, with excellent concentration, lively acidity and rich, powdery tannins. Perfumed and resonant, this is a deep, young Pauillac that this year is more like its neighbor Château Latour than Pichon Lalande.
Château Pichon Longueville Baron is located on a prime terroir in Pauillac, known for its gravelly soils conducive to the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape variety in the vineyards. The estate covers approximately 73 hectares, with Cabernet Sauvignon comprising the majority of the plantings, supplemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Vineyard management at Pichon Longueville Baron is meticulous, with an emphasis on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The combination of the unique terroir and careful vineyard management contributes to the distinctive character of the wines produced on the estate. Château Pichon Longueville Baron follows a traditional approach to winemaking, combining modern techniques with respect for the estate's heritage and history. The winemaking team, led by the talented technical director, seeks to express the nuances of the terroir in each vintage. The vinification process involves careful sorting of the grapes, temperature-controlled fermentation and maturation in a combination of new and used oak barrels. Wise use of oak has been made, allowing the wines to develop complexity and structure without overpowering the fruit characteristics. The wines of Château Pichon Longueville Baron are known for their depth, elegance and aging potential. They typically display a rich bouquet of dark fruit, cassis and cedarwood, with a firm tannin structure that offers excellent aging potential. The estate's commitment to quality and consistency has cemented its status as one of the leading producers in the Pauillac appellation and Bordeaux as a whole.

The 2019 Pichon-Longueville Baron will go down as one of this château's great wines of the modern era, along with 2016, 2010 and 1989. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, sweet loamy soil and violets, it's full-bodied, velvety and layered, with superb concentration, lively acids and rich, powdery tannins. Perfumed and resonant, this is a profound young Pauillac that bears more of a resemblance to its neighbor Château Latour than to Pichon Lalande this year. Pichon Baron was one of the great deals of the en primeur campaign, and readers who purchased futures are to be congratulated on their foresight.
The numbers speak for themselves: until 2000, Pichon-Longueville Baron produced some 350,000 bottles per year; since 2001, that figure has fallen to 160,000. Managing director Christian Seely's first decision on arriving at the property was to reduce production, focusing the grand vin on Cabernet Sauvignon growing on the deep gravel terraces opposite Château Latour that have always been the heart of this historic estate and which were the source of the great duo of 1989 and 1990 before being joined by other holdings after a series of acquisitions in the early 1990s. The results speak for themselves in the form of a series of excellent vintages, and things improved further with the construction of a new barrel cellar in 2006, permitting better temperature control and more precision during élevage. In style, Pichon Baron these days has more in common stylistically with the depth and structure of Latour than it does with the perfumed sensuality of its sibling, Pichon Lalande; and in quality, it's clearly one of contemporary Bordeaux's greatest wines. It's hard to know whether 2010, 2016 or 2019 will emerge as the best Pichon Baron of the decade—and of Seely's tenure up to the time of writing—but what is certain is that the 2019 is a striking wine that any Bordeaux lover would want to have in their cellar.
Pichon Baron is different this year. Very different. So different, I had to check the bottle. Same label. Different wine. Better wine.
“I think that it is different,” Christian Seely, managing director of AXA Millésimes, which owns Château Pichon Longueville-Baron, told me when I asked him what was going on over there. “I’ve just done a vertical, and it does stand out as different. What particularly showed well this year was the Cabernet. Now, we are only sourcing the Cabernet from our best terroirs, our deepest gravels on the plateau. We were tasting these and they were so impressive. So, this is the highest proportion of Cabernet ever in Pichon Baron. And there was one parcel of Merlot that did very well—also planted on the plateau. It is the most delicate and fine. What’s amazing is the freshness in the wine is almost paradoxical—it was a year when the grapes got extremely ripe. 2019 was a year for the great terroirs to shine. The freshness is almost counterintuitive.”
Politically speaking, I’m not entirely sure what is happening behind the scenes at Pichon Baron, but last year’s 2018 offering was a considerable step up from anything I have ever tasted before at this estate, and this year is, astonishingly, even better. Selection, selection, selection no doubt plays a part. According to Seely, only 49% of the crop made it into this grand vin—just slightly stricter than last year. Frankly, I’m in awe of what Seely and his team have been doing. Keep doing it!

Blackberries and blueberries with stone and graphite. Flint and black licorice, too. So perfumed. Full-bodied, very long and linear with incredible length. The new 1990, but better crafted. Chewy, yet so tailored and wonderfully proportioned. Freshness and elegance. Wonderful depth. 87% cabernet sauvignon rest merlot. The highest ever proportion of cabernet. Try after 2026.

From: Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)
The 2019 Pichon Baron is quite closed on the nose, blackberry, bilberry and incense, with graphite and cedar developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, not quite as finessed as Pichon Lalande, but with great structure and density on the close. It needs a little more precision to develop on the finish but just give it time. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The 2019 Pichon-Baron is magnificent. In fact, the 2019 is one of the very finest recent vintages I can remember tasting. Cabernet Sauvignon is the highest ever in the Grand Vin at 87%. That comes through in the wine's vibrancy, explosive power and overall profile. Dark cherry, plum, gravel, licorice and incense infuse the 2019 with tremendous depth to match its virile personality. Pichon-Baron was impressive from barrel and it is again today from bottle. Superb.

The 2019 Pichon Baron was picked from September 18 to October 11. It has a captivating bouquet of intense blackberry, cedar, Japanese nori and sea spray notes on the nose, all exquisitely defined and poised. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied and classic in style, with pencil-lead-infused black fruit, lovely poise and not a single hair out of place toward the finish. Christian Seely believes this vintage suited Pichon-Baron, and that is confirmed by the quality in bottle. Outstanding.
