The Pétrus winery and its reputation in Pomerol
Château Pétrus is one of the most mythical wine estates in the world, located at the highest point of the famous Pomerol plateau in Bordeaux. The vineyard of approximately 11.4 hectares is planted entirely with Merlot and rests on unique blue clay – a terroir that is essential to the signature of Pétrus. Since 2008, the estate has been led by Olivier Berrouet, who builds on decades of experience and the pursuit of perfection.
Climate and growing conditions in 2024
The 2024 growing season had its challenges: coulure ensured airy bunches and the warm, dry summer led to hydric stress – an advantage for Merlot on clay soils. Thanks to the water reserves in the blue clay, the vine was able to continue to function. The harvest took place from 24 September to 1 October, a compact but careful picking in which the fragility of the berries required extra attention. Selection and caution were key, with minimal oxygen input and transport under nitrogen.
Vinification and maturation of Pétrus 2024
To limit oxidation, oxygen input during vinification was strictly controlled. Transfers were done with nitrogen injection. The wine is aged in 50% new oak, with less racking than usual to preserve aromatic integrity. The goal of the Berrouet team is to preserve charm, finesse and aromatic layering, despite the climatic extremes of the year.
Grape composition and analytical data
The wine is made entirely of Merlot – a typical choice for Pétrus. The alcohol content is 13.3% and the pH is 3.6. There were no losses due to mildew, which is remarkable given the fragile conditions. Production is very limited, as usual.
Tasting notes and aromatic experience
The nose opens impressively with notes of blackcurrant, blueberry, strawberry, tobacco and a hint of iodine. Ripe raspberries, strawberry jam and blueberries also come forward, complemented by leather, bitter orange and spices. The aromatic profile is more expressive than many other Pomerols of this vintage.
On the palate the wine is velvety, with cashmere tannins and perfectly balanced acidity. The structure is linear but with deep tension and energy. The tannins are layered, almost pixelated, and develop a soft, juicy texture over time. The wine finishes with a hint of spice and blueberry – layered, serious and incredibly precise. The wine comes straight from Chateau and is packaged in OWC/1
Wine Critics Reviews
- Decanter (Georgina Hindle): – “Seductive nose, juicy and linear, with lively acidity and impressive length.”
- Vinous (Neal Martin): “Pétrus 2024 has more flesh and charm than other Pomerols, with excellent balance.”

The 2023 Pétrus reveals a fresh, perfumed bouquet of raspberries, cassis, iris and violet mingled with hints of spices, followed by a full-bodied, layered and textural palate with a deep core of pure, crystalline fruit framed by exquisitely sweet structuring tannins. Concluding with an ethereal, resonant finish, it represents a singular interpretation of this estate in a more tensile, ethereal style, and it's all the more compelling for that. This year, Olivier Berrouet minimized pumping over to avoid over-extracting, thereby preserving ultra-refined tannins. The harvest, conducted between September 11 and 20, brought in the Merlot grapes at their optimal maturity. As usual, it will mature 50% in new oak.

Intense blackberry and chocolate aromas with plenty of ripe pips and spices. Medium body with fluidity and a sense of wonder to it. The quality of the tannins is so good as to be imperceptible. It has 30% more tannin than the 2022, but then it grows on the finish. pH 3.65 and 14.5% alcohol.

From: The Dalmatian Vintage: Bordeaux 2023 (Apr 2024)
The 2023 Pétrus has a very open and expressive bouquet. Whereas in recent years it has taken time to unfurl in the glass, this is much more immediate, with raspberry, blackcurrant, iris flower and violet scents. Does it have the complexity of the previous vintage? I don't think so—not at this stage. The palate is very well structured with fine tannins, and you can tell that this is a Pétrus with heft and backbone. This is very precise on the finish, with touches of cracked black pepper, clove and a dab of dark chocolate. This is an excellent Pomerol, even if I feel that the 2022 has more…ambition.
- By Neal Martin on April 2024
Olivier Berrouet offered insight into his latest vintage at Pétrus, though I thoughtlessly failed to phone ahead in case Jay-Z was visiting. “The season began with some mildew pressure, but for once, we had good conditions for the flowering. Therefore, we had a great yield potential and reached 40hL/ha, which is much better than previous vintages. It was warm, but not over a long period. It was more like short heat waves with cooler weather in between, so it did not impact the vines so much. The rain in July and August was very important. The difficulty was deciding when to pick. Everyone was nervous at the beginning of September. We picked from September 11 to 20, but you had to wait for ripeness on the blue clay soils, and the window is often shorter. If you don't pick ripe, then you will lose something. What surprised us during vinification is that the wine was very aromatic in the vat but without jammy aromas, more raspberry and violet scents. Even though there was a lot of sugar, we could feel the structure of the wine: we have 30% more tannins than in 2022. The alcohol is 14.5% with a pH of 3.65.”

Gorgeous aromatic profile; a little herbal, inky almost, pencil led, crayon, floral notes of iris and violet, cool blue fruits, mint and fresh raspberry. Some definite stoney minerality on the nose - dark and smoky. Racy and alive, this has zing combined with a chalky graphite grip to the tannins. Fresh and clean, really well defined with tannins that give the structure but despite their presence they're so harmonious. This is just so good, really juicy, mouthwateringly so, but keeps the straight finesse all the way through. It’s soft and totally charming - not over the top at all, yet not discrete either. This has confidence and character. A balance of power and delicacy with a touch of flesh on the finish that gives an extra bounce and sense of enjoyment. A subtle and stealthy wine that sneaks up on you, leaving you wanting more by the finish. 3.65pH. An extra gram of tannins per litre of wine (4g) compared to 3g in 2022. Harvest September 11-20. A potential 100-point wine.

Château Pétrus is owned by the Moueix family and located in Pomerol (Bordeaux). Château Pétrus produces the most famous Merlot wine in the world! The vineyard covers just 11.5 hectares and is planted with 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc vines, with an average age of 45 years. The soil consists of iron-rich clay.
Château Pétrus: the ultimate icon of Pomerol
Château Pétrus is without a doubt one of the most legendary wine estates in the world. Situated in the heart of the Bordeaux region, on the plateau of Pomerol, this modest estate has been producing exceptional red wines for decades. Although Pétrus does not carry an official classification (Pomerol has no Grand Cru system), the wine is globally regarded as one of the very best, often mentioned in the same breath as the Premier Crus of the Médoc.
The terroir of Château Pétrus
What makes Pétrus so special is its unique terroir. The 11.5-hectare vineyard lies on a rare subsoil of blue clay; a type of soil found almost nowhere else in Bordeaux. This clay retains water exceptionally well, which is crucial in dry years, and gives the wines their remarkable power and refinement. Its location on the highest point of Pomerol also ensures optimal sun exposure and drainage.
Pétrus produces Merlot in its purest form
Pétrus is almost entirely planted with Merlot. This grape thrives on the heavy clay soil and produces wines that are rich, velvety, and powerful. In some vintages, a small percentage of Cabernet Franc is added, but the focus is always on expressing Merlot at its finest. In the glass, this translates into intense aromas of black fruit, truffle, cocoa, and violets, with a sensual texture and an endless finish. The wine can age for decades, gaining in complexity and depth over time.
Meticulous vinification at Château Pétrus
At Château Pétrus, every detail matters. From rigorous selection in the vineyard to slow fermentation and aging in carefully chosen French oak barrels - every step of the winemaking process is aimed at crafting a wine that is both grand and elegant. Only a few thousand cases are produced each year, which adds to its exclusivity.
A wine for collectors and true enthusiasts
Pétrus is more than just a wine. It is a collector’s item, a symbol of prestige, and above all a singular taste experience. Those lucky enough to own a bottle will discover the essence of top Bordeaux, made with dedication, tradition, and a pursuit of perfection. It is a wine that reveals its full potential only in the best vintages, making each release eagerly anticipated.
