Description
The Château Pétrus 2012 in Magnum format is a rare and impressive presence in the world of great Bordeaux wines. This 100% Merlot from the heart of Pomerol comes from the iconic blue clay soil on which Pétrus built its reputation. While 2012 was initially seen as a modest vintage after the spectacular 2009 and 2010, the wine has undergone a remarkable transformation in the years that have followed. Today it is one of the underrated gems of the decade – and in Magnum it blossoms even more slowly and complexly.
A wine that exceeds expectations
2012 saw a cool and wet spring, followed by a warm and dry late summer. Although conditions initially seemed less than ideal, this turned out to be in favour of terroirs with perfect drainage and deep root structures – such as those of Pétrus. The harvest was selective, yields low, and concentration high.
In the Magnum format, this wine matures more slowly and harmoniously, which further enhances the refined character and depth of this vintage. Now – more than ten years after its release – the wine shows a wonderful balance between power and elegance, with layers of black fruit, truffle, graphite and velvety tannins.
Critical praise from wine journalists
The international wine press has looked at the Pétrus 2012 with renewed eyes. What was once described as “classically good” is now getting the appreciation it deserves:
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded the wine 96+ points and called it “a beautifully elegant Pétrus” with “remarkable depth and finesse.” Later tasting notes emphasize the increased complexity and length.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) called it “a sleeper vintage of Pétrus”, with in later years “gorgeous texture and nuanced layers that continue to unfold.”
James Suckling gave it 98 points and praised the balance and concentration: “Very fine and persistent. Subtle power.”
Jancis Robinson called the wine “one of the most charming Pétrus expressions of the last decade,” with a soft, silky structure that excels especially in Magnum.
Why choose the Magnum?
A Magnum bottle (1.5 litres) allows for a slower development, ideal for wines with great ageing potential. In the case of Pétrus 2012, this means that the wine reveals its aromatic depth and texture with even more precision and layering. It is a format that is not only collectible, but also perfect for that special occasion where grandeur is combined with finesse.

Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting, the 2012 Petrus demonstrated a forward, fruit-driven, ripe raspberry and wild strawberry bouquet underneath which lies graphite and forest floor aromas. It seems refined, understated, nonchalant even. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly savory opening, as if there was a tiny drop of Cabernet Franc. The tannins are fine but firm, the red fruit infused with cooked meat, black pepper and sage notes, although I was anticipating a finish armed with more body. That may well develop in time, yet it remains a regal Pomerol that will probably merit a higher score with bottle age, hence the plus-sign against the score. Tasted January 2016.

This shows fabulous length with a chocolate, berry and mineral undertone. Licorice and currants too. Full body yet refined with seamless tannins. Goes on for minutes. It shows such amazing length and elegance. Depth. Phenomenal structure here, especially for the vintage. Reminds me of the 1998 or 1971, which were structured yet very fine.

From: A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)
The 2012 Petrus has a slightly higher-toned bouquet than its peers: scents of brambly red fruit and briary, liquorice and dried herbs. This gains complexity in the glass, and a second bottle at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year-On, given two hours to open, develops some gorgeous pure plummy fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy, ripe and harmonious with pliant tannins and a little more obvious oak towards the sensual finish, white pepper and thyme lingering on the aftertaste. Wonderful. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

Château Pétrus is owned by the Moueix family and located in Pomerol (Bordeaux). Château Pétrus produces the most famous Merlot wine in the world! The vineyard covers just 11.5 hectares and is planted with 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc vines, with an average age of 45 years. The soil consists of iron-rich clay.
Château Pétrus: the ultimate icon of Pomerol
Château Pétrus is without a doubt one of the most legendary wine estates in the world. Situated in the heart of the Bordeaux region, on the plateau of Pomerol, this modest estate has been producing exceptional red wines for decades. Although Pétrus does not carry an official classification (Pomerol has no Grand Cru system), the wine is globally regarded as one of the very best, often mentioned in the same breath as the Premier Crus of the Médoc.
The terroir of Château Pétrus
What makes Pétrus so special is its unique terroir. The 11.5-hectare vineyard lies on a rare subsoil of blue clay; a type of soil found almost nowhere else in Bordeaux. This clay retains water exceptionally well, which is crucial in dry years, and gives the wines their remarkable power and refinement. Its location on the highest point of Pomerol also ensures optimal sun exposure and drainage.
Pétrus produces Merlot in its purest form
Pétrus is almost entirely planted with Merlot. This grape thrives on the heavy clay soil and produces wines that are rich, velvety, and powerful. In some vintages, a small percentage of Cabernet Franc is added, but the focus is always on expressing Merlot at its finest. In the glass, this translates into intense aromas of black fruit, truffle, cocoa, and violets, with a sensual texture and an endless finish. The wine can age for decades, gaining in complexity and depth over time.
Meticulous vinification at Château Pétrus
At Château Pétrus, every detail matters. From rigorous selection in the vineyard to slow fermentation and aging in carefully chosen French oak barrels - every step of the winemaking process is aimed at crafting a wine that is both grand and elegant. Only a few thousand cases are produced each year, which adds to its exclusivity.
A wine for collectors and true enthusiasts
Pétrus is more than just a wine. It is a collector’s item, a symbol of prestige, and above all a singular taste experience. Those lucky enough to own a bottle will discover the essence of top Bordeaux, made with dedication, tradition, and a pursuit of perfection. It is a wine that reveals its full potential only in the best vintages, making each release eagerly anticipated.
