The 2024 is among the best wines of the vintage 2024 - 95 Anson / 94-96 Galloni / 94-96 Martin / 94-96 Leve / 93-95 Wine Advocate / 17.5 Robinson “…one of the wines of the vintage.” – Jane Anson
This rendition is every bit a classic Bordeaux - Made from a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Montrose is a serious, muscular wine that ranks among the vintage’s top wines. In the glass, it unfolds with aromas of cassis, smouldering charcoal, cigar leaf and iris. Medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, it has a lively acid backbone, firm, structuring tannins and a long, penetrating finish. With both Montrose’s highest Cabernet Sauvignon content ever and a relatively low pH of 3.55, this wine is sure to be among the most enduring Bordeaux wines of 2024.

1. Grilled beef ribs with grilled zucchini and thyme potatoes
The proteins and fat in the meat soften the tannins, while the grilled vegetables and herbs enhance the earthy and spicy notes in the wine.
2. Leg of lamb with garlic, rosemary and black olives
The savoury, spicy flavours complement the power of the wine, accentuating the dark fruit and structure, with a hint of Mediterranean depth.
3. Coq au vin with mushrooms, bacon and silver onions
The long-braised chicken in red wine builds bridges to the aromatic complexity of Montrose, while the umami character allows the ripe fruit to speak beautifully.
4. Baked eggplant with tomato, Parmesan and oregano
The soft, toasted textures and savory flavors of this dish complement the concentration and spiciness of the wine. The cheese enhances the mouthfeel.
5. Duck breast with beetroot, black cherries and sage jus
The combination of juicy meat, earthy beetroot and fruity sauce brings out both the floral and ripe profile of the wine. The spicy jus connects the elements.
6. Venison loin with chestnut puree, Brussels sprouts and black garlic jus
The intense flavour of game and the earthy chestnuts match the strength and depth of the wine. The black garlic adds a soft, sweet-spicy dimension that is in balance with the wine structure.

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Montrose is a serious, muscular effort that numbers among the wines of the vintage. Unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, burning embers, cigar wrapper and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, with a lively spine of acidity, rich structuring tannins and a long, penetrating finish. With both the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon recorded at Montrose and a rather low pH of 3.55, it will surely number among the longest lived 2024 Bordeaux.
Montrose was one of the terroirs favored by the 2024 vintage, experiencing comparatively good weather at flowering and at least a moderate hydric constraint at veraison. Viticulture was adapted to conditions, with deleafing a month earlier than usual, retention of cover crops for as long as possible and hedging canopies higher to boost ripening. Two green harvests, one on July 20 and another at the end of veraison, brought more homogenous maturity. Harvest took place between 23 September and 7 October.

Wow. This is the essence of Montrose, with blackberry, blackcurrant, crushed stone and earth. I have not tasted a Montrose like this in 42 years of my career. It has a much more vertical nature to it, with layered tannins that go very deep and long, The muscular structure and intensity is something else. This is a new era for Montrose. It is now made from only 45 hectares of vineyards right in front of the chateau, instead of about 60 before. 75% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot and 4% cabernet franc.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Montrose has a little more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend due to the yields in various parcels. It was picked between September 23 and October 7 and matured in 60% new oak. The well-defined and very able nose demonstrates classicism, fine delineation and a little more florality than the Terrasse III. The palate is medium-bodied with very finely chiselled tannins and a keen line of acidity. This symmetrical Saint-Estèphe is blessed with an elegant, sapid and reassuringly precise finish that the estate seems to have honed in the last few years. It does not have the unbridled ambition of, say, the 2020 Montrose, but it is exceptionally well crafted and will become a fine Saint-Estèphe.

This is another estate where I made two visits at the beginning and end of my Bordeaux marathon. It was interesting to note that the Grand Vin showed more precision and nervosité on the second, perhaps due to the weather or evolution of the unfinished wine itself. The news here is the introduction of a third cuvée: Terrace III. Cleaving away the fruit from parcels located on this glacial formation means that the Grand Vin is now exclusively sourced from the Terrace IV (in some ways, a similar reason why Pichon-Baron introduced Les Griffons). Terrace III sits between Les Dames and Montrose.
“There was less rain in August and beginning of September,” head winemaker Vincent Decup tells me on the first visit. “It was between 50 to 100 mm less than average. Temperatures were quite close to normal. It is an Atlantic vintage. The whole estate is now organic, which made it more challenging, but we can maintain the quality of the vintage by removing leaves just before flowering at fruit set on the east side, allowing grass to grow to improve water stress, maintaining a higher canopy to improve transpiration and photosynthesis and by removing clusters touched by mildew or irregular ripeness. On August 20 we removed some bunches on the west-side to be sure to reach the best maturity possible. We started picking on September 23 until October 7, cropped at 38hl/ha with sorting at reception, though we had worked hard during the growing season to lessen the amount we had to remove.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Montrose exudes Cabernet Sauvignon character in its aromatic savoriness and tannic structure. In fact, the 2024 has the most Cabernet Sauvignon ever. Tightly wound today, the 2024 impresses with its energy and focus. There's a bit less mid-palate and overall heft than most years, as well as a brighter fruit profile. Floral, spice and mineral overtones lend brightness throughout. The 2024 is a super-classic, nervy Montrose that will need a number of years to be at its most expressive. Aging is projected to be 18 months, with 60% new oak.

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
