Description
Château Gruaud-Larose is a wine estate in Bordeaux and a second cru from the 1855 Bordeaux wine classification system. It is located in the village of Saint-Julien. For a long time it was one of the most important châteaux in the village, only overshadowed by the - originally undivided - Léoville. This cru, located behind Ch. Branaire Ducru and next to Ch. Lagrange, benefits from a magnificent terroir of stony deposits (from the Gironde, 700,000 years ago). It has belonged to the Merlaut family since 1997 and in recent years the wines have been awarded very high ratings without exception and their Gruaud-Larose is above all a super feminine, refined and delicate, but beautifully concentrated St. Julien. The vineyards are (or are in conversion) to organic viticulture.
The Sarget Gruaud Larose is the 2nd wine of Chateau Gruaud Larose and as is so often the case with a 2nd wine, the price/quality is certainly excellent compared to the 1st wine. The Sarget de Gruaud Larose is composed of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon supplemented with Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and has a deep red color with purple-black hues in the glass. In the nose, the wine has lively aromas of blueberries, warm plums and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of mocha, a bit of leather and a touch of potpourri. Medium to full bodied in the mouth with a backbone of fine-grained tannins and a good freshness that ends perfectly with a long aftertaste.
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to pick up the wine you will often receive a nice discount. We are almost next to the Rijksweg with plenty of parking. Click here for address
WINE-FOOD SUGGESTIONS:
Grilled rib steak with mustard marinade
The structure and spicy character of the wine go well with the juicy meat and the spicy mustard.Beef stew with carrot and bay leaf
The soft tannins and ripe fruit of the wine harmonize with the deep, slow-cooked flavors of the stew.Pizza with mushrooms, Parma ham and rocket
The earthy and savoury notes of the toppings perfectly complement the classic Bordeaux style of red fruits and a hint of cedar.Roasted eggplant with tomato and parmesan cheese
The layered flavours of vegetables and cheese are beautifully captured by the elegance and balance of the wine.Leg of lamb with garlic, rosemary and red wine jus
The spicy and juicy character of the lamb is fully enhanced by the depth and ripe tannins of the wine.Venison carpaccio with truffle oil and old cheese
The refined texture and earthiness of the dish complement the complexity, structure and balance of this second wine from Château Gruaud-Larose.

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Sarget de Gruaud Larose is a bold, juicy second wine that will drink well right out of the gate. Succulent red cherry/plum fruit and sweet spice notes are pushed forward. Soft contours wrap it all together while pretty floral accents lift the finish. This mid-weight Saint-Julien is a delight.
