Château Figeac: historic winery in Saint-Émilion

Château Figeac is one of the oldest and most prestigious wine estates in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux. The estate has its roots in Roman times and has been in the hands of the Manoncourt family for generations. Under the leadership of Frédéric Faye, in collaboration with the family, the château has become a modern icon that combines tradition and innovation. The estate covers approximately 54 hectares and is known for its unique terroir with gravelly soils, ideal for Cabernet-dominant blends.

The location and climate of Château Figeac in Bordeaux

Located in the west of Saint-Émilion, Château Figeac has an exceptional terroir that is rare in the region: three ridges of Günz gravel. This composition, combined with a temperate climate and excellent drainage, allows for a long growing season with optimal ripening conditions for grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

2024 Château Figeac: grape composition and harvest year

The 2024 vintage is a triumph in a complex year. Despite record rainfall during the growing season, Château Figeac managed to produce a high-quality wine thanks to a combination of terroir, precision farming and rigorous selection. The blend is composed of:

  • 39% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 33% Merlot
  • 28% Cabernet Franc

Harvest took place between 20 September and 5 October. Strict selection, including optical sorting and use of density baths, resulted in the sorting out of 21% of the harvest. The final yield was 31 hL/ha, a clear indication of the focus on quality over quantity.

Fermentation and maturation of Château Figeac 2024

After a cold maceration, an individual approach to fermentation per barrel followed. Gentle extraction and controlled temperature ensured a balanced structure and elegance. Skin maceration lasted three to four weeks, in line with the established methods of the domain. Malolactic fermentation went smoothly. Maturation takes place in French oak barrels, some of which are new, to increase complexity and maturation potential.

Tasting profile of the 2024 Château Figeac

The wine shows a deep ruby red colour. On the nose there are refined aromas of blackcurrant, violets, graphite and subtle wood tones. On the palate the wine is fresh and refined, with lively acidity, silky tannins and a long, mineral finish. Despite the climatic challenges, this vintage is exceptionally balanced and characterful.

Wine and food pairings at Château Figeac 2024

  • Grilled ribeye with rosemary and coarse sea salt – The structure and juiciness of the meat match perfectly with the powerful yet elegant tannins.
  • Pea risotto with Parmesan and lemon – The freshness of the wine supports the creamy character of the dish, while the acids provide balance.
  • Oven-baked rack of lamb with garlic and thyme – The spiciness and fat content of the lamb are beautifully carried by the wine's complexity.
  • Mushroom Wellington with truffle jus – The earthy notes of mushrooms and truffle match the mineral character of the wine perfectly.
  • Roasted duck breast with figs and red wine sauce – The sweet-savoury balance in the dish is enhanced by the ripe fruit tones of the wine.

Château Figeac is a renowned winery located in the Saint-Émilion appellation on the right bank of the Bordeaux wine region in France.

History of Château Figeac

Château Figeac has a long and rich history, dating back to the 2nd century, when it was originally a Roman villa. The estate has undergone several transformations over the centuries. In the 19th century, the estate came into the possession of the Manoncourt family, who played an important role in shaping its modern identity.

Vineyards and terroir of Château Figeac

The vineyards of Château Figeac cover approximately 40 hectares (approximately 99 acres) and are planted with mainly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grape varieties. The estate is known for its unique terroir, characterized by a combination of gravel, limestone and clay soils. This terroir contributes to the distinctive qualities of the wines produced.

Wine production of Château Figeac

Château Figeac is known for its traditional winemaking practices, which include hand-harvesting the grapes and using a combination of stainless steel and wooden fermentation vats. The estate produces a Grand Vin, the flagship wine, as well as a second wine called "Petit Figeac". The Grand Vin is the flagship wine and is typically a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The exact blend may vary depending on the vintage. Petit Figeac is the second wine from Château Figeac, often made from younger vines or grapes that do not meet the criteria for Grand Vin. It provides a more accessible and approachable option at a younger age. Château Figeac has the status of Premier Grand Cru Classé (Class B) in the classification of Saint-Émilion wines. This classification recognizes the estate's consistent production of high quality wines. Château Figeac wines are highly regarded for their elegance, complexity and ability to age gracefully. They are often praised by wine critics and enthusiasts.
