The history of Château Ausone dates back to Roman times. The estate is named after Ausonius, a Roman poet and statesman who owned the property in the 4th century AD. Ausonius is known for his work "Mosella," a Latin poem describing the Moselle River and its surroundings. The property's association with this prominent figure contributes to its historical significance. The estate was cultivated throughout the Middle Ages, with various owners overseeing its development. During this period, viticultural and winemaking practices in the region evolved, paving the way for Bordeaux to become one of the world's most sought-after wine-producing regions.

Château Ausone's vineyards are located on the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau, renowned for producing wines of exceptional finesse and aging potential. The estate's vineyard is relatively small but is planted with a mix of grape varieties. Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the primary grapes, with a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend, contributing to the unique character of Ausone's wines. The limestone soil and south-facing slopes of the vineyard play a crucial role in producing high-quality grapes. Château Ausone is known for its dedication to quality and meticulous vinification. The vineyards are meticulously maintained, and the grapes are hand-harvested to ensure the highest possible fruit quality. The winemaking process combines traditional and modern techniques. The wines are typically aged in new French oak barrels to enhance complexity and structure. Château Ausone produces only a limited amount of wine each year due to the small size of its vineyard. The Grand Vin, simply called Château Ausone, is considered one of the most exceptional and rare wines in Bordeaux. The estate also produces a second wine called Chapelle d'Ausone, which offers a more accessible and easy-drinking option.

Climate, location and terroir of Château Ausone

Château Ausone's vineyards cover 7 hectares and are situated on an east-facing limestone plateau. The combination of limestone and clay ensures excellent drainage and minerality. The 2024 growing season was influenced by a wet spring followed by a warm, dry summer. The vines benefited from deep roots in the limestone and protection from extreme drought. This resulted in perfect ripening of the grapes while retaining freshness and aromatic complexity.

Grape varieties, harvest and vinification of Château Ausone 2024

The 2024 Château Ausone blend is 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot. The grapes come from vines averaging 50 years old. Harvest took place between September 21 and October 3, 2024, entirely by hand. Vinification takes place with the utmost precision in thermoregulated concrete vats, followed by aging in 100% new French oak for approximately 20 months. This approach contributes to the intense concentration, refined tannins, and long aging potential for which Ausone is known.

Color, aroma and flavor profile of Château Ausone 2024

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby red with purple reflections.
