Description
Château Angélus 2024 – "The Rebel" among the grands crus
The Château Angélus 2024 is a tribute to the craftsmanship and innovative spirit of Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, who is celebrating his 40th harvest. This vintage, aptly titled "The Rebel," demonstrates character, depth, and elegance, with a special role for Cabernet Franc. An icon from Saint-Émilion that will distinguish itself both now and in the future.
A vintage shaped by contrasts
2024 began with a wet winter and a rainy spring, with only a brief dry spell during flowering. Fortunately, a dry, sunny July and August followed, allowing the grapes to develop strength, aromatic intensity, and structure. Harvest took place between September 11 and October 6, 2024 , under mostly favorable conditions.
Vineyard and blending
Château Angélus is situated on the renowned south-facing slopes of Saint-Émilion, on limestone and clay soils. The 32-hectare vineyard consists of old vines (average age 39 years) with a planting density of 6,500 to 8,500 vines per hectare.
The blend consists of:
60% Merlot – ripe, intense fruit and juiciness,
40% Cabernet Franc – refinement, freshness, floral and spicy notes.
Vinification and maturation of the Château Angélus 2024
Vinification took place in oak and stainless steel tanks for the Merlot, and in concrete tanks for the Cabernet Franc. Selective cold maceration, controlled fermentation (up to 28°C), and post-fermentation maceration up to 30°C ensured maximum extraction of aromas and texture.
The wine then matured for 22 months :
In new French oak barrels for the Merlot and part of the Cabernet Franc,
In large 30hl foudres for another portion of the Cabernet Franc, to preserve the subtlety of the aromatic components.
Tasting notes
The color is deep purple, intense and vibrant. On the nose, the wine opens with expressive aromas of ripe Merlot—black fruit and floral accents—then the complexity of Cabernet Franc emerges: violets, peony, pepper, and menthol . The palate is powerful, energetic, and full-bodied, with rich, silky tannins like cashmere . The oak aging is subtly interwoven, providing structure without dominating. A wine with impressive aging potential.
Order information and wine and food pairing advice
The Château Angélus 2024 is a wine for special occasions and refined dishes. Think tournedos Rossini, truffle risotto, or slow-cooked game with figs. This wine will be available from early 2027 .

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, cropped at a very honorable 40 hectoliters per hectare, the 2024 Angélus has turned out well, offering up aromas of dark berries, minty plums and violet, framed by a deft touch of toasty oak. Medium-bodied, ample and suave, it's polished and textural, with sweet but present tannins and creditable persistence on the finish.

Château Angelus St.-Emilion 2024
Very classy, the transparency of this Angelus giving brilliance to the pure fruit in such a difficult growing season. Medium-bodied, it has a compacted palate and creamy, polished tannins. Very melted and harmonized. Dark cherries, raspberries and orange peel come through beautifully with some stones. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc.

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Angelus is very fine. It is the first vintage I have tasted that captures the newer approach at Angelus, one where the wines are not as extracted as in the past. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather and menthol fill out the layers effortlessly. Here, too, the wine shows superb balance and real textural presence. The blend is 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, with the Merlot being raised in 80% new oak and 20% once-filled barrels, and the Cabernet Franc in equal parts foudres and new smaller French oak barrels. The 2024 is mid-weight, classy and polished.

Michel de Boüard de Laforest, historian, chartist and rector of the Academy of Caen, researched the origins of his family. The earliest reference he found to his family tree was that of Georges Boüard, born in 1544, a Bourgeois and Jurat from the city of Bordeaux. At the end of the 18th century, in 1782, Jean de Boüard de Laforest, a bodyguard of the king, settled in Saint-Emilion. His daughter, Catherine Sophie de Boüard de Laforest, met Charles Souffrain de Lavergne in 1795 and settled on the Mazerat estate, which belonged to her husband. At the beginning of the 20th century, Maurice de Boüard de Laforest inherited the estate. He expanded it and the half kilo in 1920 with the name of a 3-hectare toe enclosure called Angélus. He left it to his sons in 1945. Jacques and Christian de Boüard de Laforest continue the work of their father and that of previous generations. The property was incorporated in 1954. They expanded it further until it exceeded 20 acres in 1985. At that time, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, son of Jacques, took over the management of the estate and was joined in 1987 by his cousin Jean-Bernard Grenié, son-in-law of Christian and later his daughter, Stéphanie de Boüard- Rivul in 2012.
The vineyard of Château Angélus is located in a natural amphitheater overlooking the three Saint-Emilion churches. In the middle of this special place, the sounds were amplified and the angel bells in the morning, afternoon and evening. They travel the working day in the rhythm in the surrounding villages and the men and women who take a few minutes to stop working and pray. The great French Impressionist painter Jean-François Millet immortalized this moment of prayer in his magnificent work "The Angelus", now on display at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Less than a kilometer from the famous bell tower of Saint-Emilion, situated at the acclaimed 'foot of the hill' facing south, Angélus has been the life's work of eight generations of the Boüard de Laforest family. In the probable classification of Saint-Emilion wines in 1954, Château Angélus was a Grand Cru Classé. Already at that time it benefited from a solid reputation, which gave rise to the Bordeaux wine crisis of 1973 and participated in the oenological renewal of the 1980s. In this context, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, graduate oenologist at the University of Bordeaux, took advantage of past of this wonderful wine, while resolutely focusing on the future strategy and developing and pursuing an ambitious and innovative policy to achieve excellence in viticulture and making.
